I love Bikeweek. I love the Bike to Work Breakfast. I love my job. Most of all I love my family. Today, at the start of Bikeweek, I was able to combine my job and the Bike to Work Breakfast. And my family came along too. Now I ask you, what more could a man want?
Arthur Muhl and Samantha Willans, our regular breakfast team, drafted me as part of the early morning shift to interview a number of people related to cycling and Bikeweek.
The picture to the left shows Arthur at the controls with me asking questions of David Myer from the Cycle Instead Bike to Work Challenge. (Click on the photos for a bigger view.)
Before I go any further a big thanks must go to our technical genius, Ash Wright, who almost single handedly put the outside broadcast together.
Around 3000 cyclists made their way to Supreme Court Gardens for a free, healthy breakfast. Thankfully they were spread out over the two and a half hours of the breakfast so those serving the food were able to cope. It was busy right from 6:00 until it all ‘officially’ wound down around 8:30. There was still quite a number of people munching and chatting even after that.
Our broadcast from the city continued until 9:00. I left just after 8:30 and made it back to the studio in time to get my morning shift underway.
It was wonderful to see so many cyclists of all descriptions all in one place. I met up with a couple of cyclists that rode with me from Perth to Hobart in 2003. I also had the chance to catch up with bloggers extrordinaire Zezza and Sarah. Kezza has written an excellent post about her Bike to Work Breakfast experiences here. I was thrilled to meet up with many other people I knew including some guys that I’ve cycled with in the past.
As well as the breakfast there were give aways, displays and cycling fashion parades. There was even a couple of people giving massages. If only I wasn’t so tied up with the broadcast I might have spent some time getting pushed around.
It’s been a full but satisfying day. I’m looking forward to bed sometime soon. Unfortunately I’ve picked up a bit of a cold so I won’t be able to enjoy my regular Saturday morning ride tomorrow. To make up for it I am hoping to take part in the Freeway Bike Hike next Sunday morning, the 19th of March. It’s one of the many Bikeweek events taking place throughout Western Australia. Any other takers to join me?
