Abortion

It’s such a divisive issue and often the debate that surrounds it becomes heated. Much of the time opposing sides can get so caught up in trying to convince each other of what they consider to be right or wrong, the people immediately affected can be forgotten.

This morning during my radio programme on 98.5 Sonshine FM I spoke to Richard Egan from the Coalition for the Defence of Human Life. Tomorrow at noon he will be part of a rally on the steps of Western Australia’s parliament to mark the 8th anniversary of legalised abortion in WA.

As part of the rally, the Coalition for the Defence of Human Life will present all MPs with a copy of a recent study into the attitudes of Australians towards abortion. “What Australians Really Think About Abortion” reports the results of comprehensive independent market research.

We are so often led to believe that the majority of Australians consider abortion as a relevant birth control option. This survey suggests that may not be the whole truth. Some of the findings are listed below.

58.3% of Western Australians believe that abortion involves the taking of a human life.

69.2% of Western Australians believe that by 20 weeks of pregnancy an unborn child is a human person with human rights.

63.3% of Western Australians do not support abortion for non-medical (financial or social) reasons.

88.3% of Western Australians believe abortion can harm the physical or mental health of a woman.

91.7% of Western Australians believe there should be a cooling-off period of several days between making an appointment to have an abortion and the actual operation.

Only 14.2% of Western Australians support abortion after 13 weeks of pregnancy.

Whatever side of the fence you’re on I’m sure that most of us would agree that we need to support the women who are directly affected by abortion. While I don’t agree with abortion it’s not my place to condemn any woman who has chosen to terminate a pregnancy. I don’t believe that abortion is a decision that is taken lightly by the vast majority of the women who choose to take that option.

I would like to see the laws on abortion changed but I really don’t believe that legislation will ever be an effective way of dealing with such a deeply moral issue.

  • I don’t agree with abortion, and feel it is only an option if the mother’s life is in jeopardy. So if it were put to a vote amongst the people that is how I would vote.

Like you though, I don’t feel it is up to us to judge after the fact. I do believe however, that it is our job to educate and prepare the hearts of our men and women, and in many cases unfortunately, boys and girls, to what an abortion really is. So few really are totally educated to the details. They are told it is a glob of tissue, and no worries.

This is a subject close to my heart, as when we start to kill our own children as a people, there is definately a worry about what we are becoming.

I have read book after book, of young girls having had abortions and went on to live with the nightmare, and have their lives affected negatively.

I have read and listened to lecture after lecture as to how big a money making industry abortions have become. Doctors go in some hours a week and they pay him CASH (tax free), while discarded babies get thrown in alley dumpsters.

    It’s a tragedy.

The best education is to teach our youth to honor God, honor His creation of sacred marriage and family. It just doesn’t get better than that.
