Exploding phones

I read this morning that at least five mobile phones have exploded over the last two months in Brazil causing quite some concern among phone users there. With around 89 million phones in circulation in Brazil, 5 phones doesn’t make for a big percentage but it’s still a worry.

The probable cause of the explosions is said to be non-original or low-quality batteries.

I certainly hope that the explosions don’t continue or that injuries are caused but I can’t help thinking that exploding phones wouldn’t always be such a bad thing. I reckon that mobiles which necessitate their owners speaking very loudly in restaurants or that ring in cinemas right in the middle of a movie would be prime candidates for detonation.

Do you ever get the urge to blow up a mobile phone? When have you wanted to see your phone, or someone else’s, explode into a million tiny pieces?

  • I agree with what you said about “prime candidates for explosion”. In fact, I wouldn’t mind terribly if they took the users with them in some cases. 🙂

  • Hey Rodney, we’ve survived since 1 Feb without a mobile phone! (I guess I have borrowed a few phones here and there.) When using a phone card here (USA), it’s way cheaper to use a private phone (using your phone card) than to use a pay phone with your phone card!
In Roswell, New Mexico and head back to Kansas and Missouri in a couple of days’ time.

  • I wouldn’t mind blowing up a few phones that ring in the middle of a church service.

  • I know that the mobile phone market has exploded over the last decade . . . . but this is going a bit far. (My poor attempt at humour)
Yes, I an exploding phone would be a good deterant for those who insist on using one while driving. It would be good if it could disable the car at the same time.

  • I’m still amazed by the number of people who insist on chatting on the phone while they’re driving. Blowing their phones up just may be the answer.
