It's a long way to the top

The weather was just perfect for yesterday’s annual Pickering Brook Agricultural Show. It’s a marvellous event with all kinds of displays, sideshow rides, non-stop entertainment and a wonderful fireworks display.

I had the task of being the ground announcer once again. It was my job to let people know what was happening around the ground as well as doing a couple of introductions on the stage.

Pauline needed to take James to Auskick in the morning so I decided I’d cycle to Pickering Brook. Pauline, Emily and James headed up to join me a little later in the day. The bike fitted neatly in the boot of the car for the return journey later in the evening.

While it’s only a little more than 30 km from home to the showgrounds, a major obstacle on the way is the climb up Welshpool Road. It simply keeps going up. One day I’ll have to take a photo of the incredible view you get half way up the hill. You look back and get an amazing view of Perth city and the surrounding suburbs.

I’ve climbed bigger hills on my bike but I was a bit fitter at the time. I stopped a few times to catch my breath before pushing on towards the summit.

Once I’d conquered the main climb there was still a little up and down to contend with before I reached my destination. Of course before that I had to stop and change the tube in my front tyre. I’m only glad it didn’t flat on the major climb.

So I’m not as fit as I once was. I can’t climb as well as I’d like. Having said that, I did make it all the way up the climb and felt just fine afterwards. Strange how the mind works. Although I know I need to get in a few more kilometres before next time, I’m already looking forward to doing it all over again. I’m can hardly wait to really conquer Welshpool Road.
