Burning Questions

I’ve mentioned Question of the Day before as a great place to go to get yourself thinking, to share more about who you are and to learn more about others.

Different kinds of questions are being asked most days in Western Australia’s daily newspaper, The West Australian. The questions in The West aren’t so much about having fun or revealing more of your personality, they’re more about gaining knowledge about interesting or obscure subjects.

People are encouraged to write in with questions about the origins of words and phrases or just about everyday stuff that leaves them puzzled. The questions are published in the Today section of the newspaper under the title Burning Questions. Other readers are then encouraged to provide answers. It’s always interesting when you get a couple of people answering the same question with quite different or opposing explanations.

Unfortunately Burning Questions isn’t published online but below is a sampling of recent questions. Feel free to add your answers in the comments section of this post. If you don’t know the answers, make them up. Let’s have some fun.

Why does salt kill snails?

If the prefix “quin” normally denotes five of something, why does a quinella mean the first two horses in a race?

Why do pigeons bob their heads when they walk?

Why doesn’t your face seem to get as cold as the rest of your body?

Why are security camera pictures always blurred and indistinct?

I have my own opinions on a couple of these but I’d like to see what you come up with. I’ll probably post a few more from time to time. Maybe you’d like to pose some of your own questions.

  • Hi Rodney
Can anyone answer why we only have speed restrictions around schools and not the zoo and childcare centres (where the children may be younger and more at danger from speeding motorists)?
    thanks
I enjoy the questions in the daily paper
    Regards
    Pam
