God and Government

The Australian Democrats are running an online survey to see what Australians think about links between religious beliefs and government.

Whether you think that matters of faith should or shouldn’t influence our political leaders, I urge you to take the time to have your say by filling in the survey and encouraging others to do the same.

I find it interesting that one of the questions is, “In which of the following areas do you think government policy has been influenced by religious beliefs?” They then list a number of policy areas. I had to say all of them. Your view of God or your thoughts on whether God even exists will shape your worldview which in turn will influence decisions in every area of life. Anyone who says that their worldview doesn’t influence their decisions is only lying to themslves.

  • Hey Rodney, hmmm, maybe I got it wrong, but I read that question as being “in Australia, which of the government policies below have obviously been affected by religion”. I reckon that “stem cell research”, for instance, has been affected by religious beliefs, but “asylum seekers” has not (what is the possible rationale for the Australian government policy?)

Then again, maybe I’m trying to apply logic and reason where it is not there 🙂

    Cheers,

    Thomas
