Just one paperclip

I see that a Canadian blogger has been handed the keys to a three bedroom house, exactly a year after he offered a red paper clip online, asking to trade it for bigger or better things.

In his latest trade, Kyle MacDonald swapped a small role in a movie for a house in the small Western Canadian town of Kipling, Saskatchewan.

On his blog, One Red Paperclip, Kyle set out his desire to swap his way up to a house. He traded in the paper clip for a fish pen and eventually traded up to an afternoon with rocker Alice Cooper before being offered a Hollywood movie role as his 14th trade.

The mayor of Kipling has now presented him with the house, swapping it for a role in a new Corbin Bernsen movie.

Not bad … a house in Canada for just one paper clip. I visited Canada for two weeks back in 1992. I loved it. If Kyle can ge a house with just one paperclip I’m going to head back over there with a whole box of paperclips.

  • Rodney,

This is more of a personal note, sorry that I did not have your e-mail address.

I’m following up on a tip from Joe Carter. He said it is not inappropriate to send people, on just one occasion, an invitation to a blog/website that might interest them. Given some of your comments I’ve read at Challies.com, I think you might find my site to be of interest.

My name is Alex Chediak, and I am an apprentice at The Bethlehem Institute, a seminary-level training program run by Pastors John Piper and Tom Steller. I have recently written a book called With One Voice: Singleness, Dating, and Marriage to the Glory of God. It has been endorsed by Albert Mohler, Ben Patterson, Bruce Ware, and Rick Holland (college pastor to John MacArthur). You can read a brief summary, several reviews, and the endorsements here:

I commend this book to you for the blessing that I think it will bring your family and others. Here is a review that I am particularly humbled by:

    Many blessings to you,

  • What a great idea! We have bartered for things at times, but not in such creative ways… I love it when people think outside the box! Thanks for sharing this, Rodney…. Debra

  • You better come and see me, Rodney! I have hundreds of paperclips. Maybe be can trade up to our own Christian community. I always enjoy visiting your blog.

Have a good and godly week!

  • I had this idea back in 1978!! Of course the internet did not exist then, and PCs were only just beginning. I was in high school at the time and so was limited to my school mates. I started with a blue bic ballpoint pen and ended up with . . . . . a black bic ballpoint pen! I also had a scheme to “Buy Bruce a (Lamborghini) Countach”. I raised a grand total of 20 cents! Perhaps I should try this one again on the internet?

  • Okay, thanks for the 4-meme… I’ve finally done it so the post is up. I even tagged 4 other unsuspecting innocent bystanders who may or may not even know me!
    Have a good one.
    Regards –
