Tax 2006

I know it’s a different case in various parts of the world, but here in Australia, our financial year runs from the 1st of July to the 30th of June. After the 30th of June we prepare and lodge a tax return in the hope that we may get a few crumbs back from the Australian Taxation Office.

Seeing as it’s July already we need to get organised and lodge our information. We’re notoriously late with getting our returns to the tax office. A couple of years ago I actually sent all our information off to our accountant on the 1st of July. I’m sure he was shocked. I know I was. He usually has to send us emails telling us how close we’re getting to the deadline months after the financial year has finished.

Last year we weren’t quite so quick. I’m hoping that this year we’ll get our details together by the end of July at the latest. I’m also hoping we’ll get a tax refund but I don’t think it’ll be anything worth writing home about even if we do.

What are you like with getting your return lodged? Do you usually have your refund cheque within the first couple of weeks of July or will you still be trying to find all your receipts in March next year?

  • I’m usually pretty quick off the mark to get my tax return in. And often do it myself online.

The past year has seen me in quite a few temp roles, and an address change, so it will probably take me awhile to receive all my group certificates.

And now that I have started my own business, things will be a bit more complex. Actually, I spent last year’s tax refund setting up my business . . .

  • I have to admit I usually wait till the last minute & then have to rush to get it all in on time. This year I’m planning on getting it done sooner rather than later. It’s really not worth putting it off. Get it done & out of the way.

  • We’re hopeless. But this year we’re owed money so that should be an incentive to get a wriggle on. Mind you, I doubt the ATO will rush to give us our refund.
