I’ve read a couple of books about Lance Armstrong and I can’t say that either book has helped me to like the guy but both have given me a great admiration for his courage, determination and ability.
The first book I read about Lance was the very popular It’s Not About the Bike which is co-written by Lance and follows his early years and his return from cancer. Great book. I really couldn’t put it down.
Last night I finished reading Danile Coyle’s account of Lance’s historic sixth Tour de France win in 2004, Tour de Force. Lance went on to win the following year giving him an amazing seven wins before his retitrement from the sport.
Coyle is a journalist who followed Armstrong’s preparations throughout the 2004 season. He gives great background on the main players, the teams and the sport of cycling itself. He also looks back at some of the main players in Lance’s life while giving interesting insights into the early lives of many of the tours top riders. While the book is pro-Lance, it certainly doesn’t just give us an ‘airbrushed’ image of the great sportsman.
The book is obviously influenced by Coyle’s own opinions but it is a great read that lets you feel like you’ve been given an ‘Access All Areas’ pass for the racing season.
I’ve seen it written that this book isn’t only for the die hard cycling fans and that may be the case but as a cyclist I can say that it’s a fascinating read both as a book about Lance Armstrong but also as a behind the scenes look at the sport I love.

I like how he was able to free himself from Sheryl Crow.
May I borrow the book one day?
