Back to school

One of the things we did on a very busy weekend was to drop in at Pauline’s old High School. They were having a birthday celebration / reunion for anyone who’d ever been to the school.

The vast majority of people there on the day were ex-students. I knew that because most of them were wearing name tags. I guess most families of ex-students weren’t all that interested in reminiscing about the good old days when they had spent their own good old days somewhere else but I was more than happy to head along and see where Pauline spent her high school years.

I got a few interesting looks as people scanned the crowd trying to catch sight of familiar faces. There was one guy in particular who stared for a few seconds longer than the others. He had the kind of look on his face that said, “He’s about my age. I think I recognise him. I just can’t remember his name or what class we were in together.” Sorry to confuse you, but in all likelihood you’ve never seen me before in your life. No, we didn’t sit next to each other in chemistry.

If I wanted to have some fun I could have grabbed a name tag, written a fictitious name and then wandered around checking out everyone else’s tags. Could you imagine the surprise if I wandered up and said, “Glen, haven’t seen you for years. We were so close in school. I can’t believe we lost touch”? Would ‘Glen’ then say, “I’m sorry, I don’t really remember you” or would he just pretend he remembered so as not to embarrass either of us?

I’ve never been to a school reunion for my own school but it sure would be fun turning up at someone else’s.

Have you been to a school reunion? Did you remember most of the faces? Did anyone turn out completely different to how you would have imagined? Was the ‘cool guy’ from school fat and bald? What did ‘miss popularity’ look like? Did that ‘dork’ you tried to ignore turn out to be the best looking and most successful person at the reunion? I’d love to hear your stories.
