Madonna’s new adoption controversy

In July last year I spoke to John Wilmot from Global Interaction during my morning radio programme on 98.5 Sonshine FM.

John has a remarkable story to tell. At the time we talked about the work he and his family are doing in Malawi. We also discussed his journey from a life in ruin to a life lived for others. It’s a wonderful insight into a changed life and I thoroughly recommend taking time out to hear about it in John’s own words. You can listen to the interview by clicking the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

John and his wife Angela live with their family in Malawi and it seems they are currently in the process of adopting another child. The only problem is, Madonna seems intent on adopting the same girl.

This story at News.com.au explains a few of the details.

The singer is planning to adopt a second Malawi orphan, 18-month-old Jessica Kondanani, after adopting 13-month-old David Banda last month.

However Australian couple John and Angela Wilmot say they are already well into the process of adopting Jessica – and fear Madonna’s celebrity status may prevent Jessica joining their family.

“We were already in the process of adopting Jessica and we hope we will be successful,” Ms Wilmot, 34, said.

“We heard that Madonna was interested in a child, who we now hear is Jessica – but we are quite far down the line with our adoption.”

I certainly hope that the situation is sorted out very quickly and that Madonna is not given any different treatment to the Wilmots. I know that John and Angela would be great parents for Jessica, who was apparently abandoned by her mother.

UPDATE: Hamo, who is a good friend of the Wilmots, has posted an update on the situation. Seems it’s all a beat up.

You can read his full post here but the relevant bit reads, “And now for the truth – I do know them and they are much valued friends – but the story isn’t true. I had an email from John and Angie tonight stating that there is no ‘tug of war with Madonna’ but that they are pursuing the adoption of the girl in question. They explained the situation and how it got to where it is today, but the simple fact is that it aint true.

I guess it just makes better news if Madonna is fighting them!

  • Obviously she can’t have a say in the matter, but if I was Jessica, I would much prefer to be adopted by the Wilmots than by Madonna. While I don’t know Madonna personally, I reckon if she adopts Jessica, most of the parenting will be done by the nannies anyway (as it probably already is for her other children).

  • I think you’re right, Sarah. Thankfully it seems that it won’t be a problem now with the Wilmots saying there’s no tug of war.

I’d love to hear the details of how the story got started.
