Thorpe retires

Professional swimmers around the world will be breathing a sigh of relief. They might have a better chance of winning a race or two in the future.

Australia’s greatest ever Olympian Ian Thorpe has just announced his retirement from competitive swimming.

The five time Olympic gold medallist, and multiple world record holder, has told a press conference in Sydney he is quitting the pool at the age of 24.

The announcement means that he can now get on with the next phase of life away from the pool.

Imagine retiring at the age of 24. I’m 43 and I’m now feeling rather ancient. I don’t think I’ll be retiring for quite a while yet.
