Sam Kekovich coming to Perth

samkekovich.jpgThis year’s Activ Dragonfly Corporate Leaders Luncheon will be held on Thursday of next week at the Perth Exhibition Convention Centre and will feature social commentator and futurist, Richard Neville as well as my guest on 98.5 Sonshine FM this morning, Sam Kekovich.

Sam is a former VFL footballer playing mainly with North Melbourne. These days he’s perhaps more well known for his love of lamb, especially around Australia Day.

I asked him if he thinks the footy of today is the same as the game he played back in the 70s as well as discussing what ‘being un-Australian’ really means.

Sam has an amazing ability to use the English language and it was a real treat to be able to talk with him.

Meditation

meditation.jpgMeditation is a spiritual discipline that is generally associated with eastern philosophies and beliefs and which is often shunned by the Christian church but is there a place for meditation in Christian belief?

There are several references to meditation in the Bible, including the following passage which begins the Psalms.

Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers.
But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.
They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do. – Psalm 1 – NLT

My regular Wednesday morning guest on 98.5 Sonshine FM is Ross Clifford who is the Principal of Morling College in New South Wales and current President of the Baptist Union of Australia. Each week we chat about a range of issues relating to spirituality and belief.

Yesterday Ross and I discussed the differences between what many would understand by the term meditation and what the Biblical understanding should be.

Meditation can be a useful tool in drawing closer to God and growing in our faith. Ross outlines some very practical ideas of how we can make meditation part of our spiritual journey.

It's almost footy time again

afl_logo.jpgAs each year passes I prove more and more that I’m hopeless at footy tipping. This year I’m at it again and I’m inviting you to give me a kicking with your tipping prowess.

If you follow AFL can I encourage you to try to beat me at tipping for the coming season?

I’ve signed up again at footytips.com.au and so I’ll be able to pit my skills against thousands of other footy fans. The best part is that you can try your skills against mine by signing up to The RodneyOlsen.net Footy Tipping Competition. Just follow the link and join up. It’s free.

Some people spend ages checking the form of each side and thinking through the match ups, the ground, the ladder and a whole range of variables before tipping. I tend to just go ahead and choose then hope for the best.

Go on. Join up. It’ll be fun.

The great thing with footytips.com.au is that you can be part of more than one competition at a time so if you’re already part of a competition with them you can still add your name to mine.

Putting life on hold

House_for_Sale_sign.jpgI love flying.

Give me the opportunity to get on an aircraft and I’ll be there but I remember many years ago sitting on a plane as it circled Melbourne airport. I think I was on a flight from Tasmania or perhaps Canberra. There had been delays earlier in the evening and so there were lots of aircraft waiting for their time to land. If I remember correctly we flew in wide circles for around 45 minutes.

As I said, I love flying, but this was just frustrating. I wanted to land so I could catch my connecting flight and then head back home to Perth.

More recently I flew home from Brisbane after travelling to the Gold Coast for a conference. We touched down at Perth airport and then had to sit in the plane on the tarmac for some time until we could taxi around to a gateway to disembark. All the gates were in use and there were a couple of other planes ahead of us waiting. Once again I felt incredibly frustrated. I was home in Perth but if I couldn’t get out of the plane I may as well have been a thousand miles away. It was as if life was on hold and there was nothing I could do about it.

Life is on hold again.

As I’ve mentioned before we’re selling our home and moving to a different area of Perth. The housing market is slow and so we’re still waiting for the right buyer to fall in love with our home in the same way as we did over 15 years ago. This home has served us well but it’s now time to move on.

In preparation for the move we enrolled Emily and James in a school in the area where we are relocating. That means that Pauline is driving them a long way each morning to school, returning home, then doing the same long drive each afternoon. On the weekend we’re going to church in the new area so it’s another long drive. It seems as if life is on hold. We’re neither in one place or the other.

Yesterday we put an offer on a home we’d like to buy in the new area but as our current home is still for sale we had to make the offer subject to the sale of our home. We don’t know if the owners of the other home will accept our offer but even if they do, we could still lose the home if someone else can make an unconditional offer.

It’s all so unsettling and it feels as if we’re just circling looking for a place to land or sitting on that tarmac hoping to find a way to get off the tarmac. The flight has been great but it’s time for it to be over so that we can move on. We truly believe that everything will happen in God’s timing but we ache for the time that it’s all over and we can go about the job of settling into our new home, wherever that may be, and get on with our lives. We’re tired of being on hold but we look forward expectantly for what’s in store. We don’t know how much longer things will be like this and we shudder when we hear of homes that take many months to sell.

If you’re a regular reader of this blog you’ll know that this is an added stress on top of what has already begun as a stressful year.

Our family would very much appreciate your prayers for our home to sell and for us to find the right home to take us through the next stages of our lives.

Low cost ways to pamper yourself

money.jpgThe news is gloomy. We keep hearing about the effects of the global financial crisis.

People are losing jobs and belts are being tightened around Australia and the rest of the world.

When times are tight the first things to go from the household budget are life’s luxuries. We no longer pamper ourselves or indulge in those treats that we’ve enjoyed in the past.

While times were good we got used to buying whatever we felt we needed or wanted. That’s no longer an option for many so should we simply forget about treating or pampering ourselves?

Life Skills Trainer, Jill Bonanno, joined me on Friday morning on 98.5 Sonshine FM for our weekly radio segment, Simply Living.

It can be a very rude awakening when you have to start deciding what to cut out when tightening the belt. When you’ve built a lifestyle around little pampering times or spending money on hair, beauty, entertainment and more extravagant foods it can be difficult going “cold turkey” when having to save money.

Therefore, I want to talk about and get peoples ideas for little ways to pamper ourselves without breaking the bank.

During my discussions with Jill, we discovered what we always knew; you can’t pay for the things that really matter in life.

As well as finding ways to pamper ourselves for less, we talked about ways to reconnect with others and to enjoy the time we share with family and friends.

If you’d like to hear our discussion just press the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

What are the ways that you manage to pamper yourself without spending a lot of money? What are the treats that you enjoy that don’t cost you too much? I’d love to hear what you have to say.
