Amazon Kindle now only $189

amazonkindle.jpgAmazon’s Kindle Wireless Reading Device has dropped it’s price again so it’s now more affordable wherever you are in the world. The basic model is now only $189. Check out the new prices here.

The discount comes as other eBook readers also drop prices but the Kindle price is even lower than its direct competitors.

With this new Kindle, you can get your books, newspapers, and magazines delivered while at home or abroad in over 100 countries.

At Amazon, we’ve always been obsessed with having every book ever printed, and we know that even the best reading device would be useless without a massive selection of books. Today, the Kindle Store has more than 350,000 books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs available. This is just the beginning. Our vision is to have every book ever printed, in any language, all available in under 60 seconds on Kindle. We won’t stop until we get there.

Whether you prefer biographies, classics, investment guides, thrillers, or sci-fi, thousands of your favorite books are available, including 104 of 112 books currently found on the New York Timesยฎ Best Seller list. New York Times Best Sellers and most new releases are $9.99, and you’ll find many books for less.

With my birthday just a month away today, so I’ve now added a Kindle to my wish list. I don’t know that anyone’s likely to buy me one but a man can hope.

The latest price drop seems to be in response to the release of the iPad. I got to play around with an iPad a few days ago and while I was impressed, I can’t see myself paying the price they’re asking at the moment. I’m sure that an iPad would be fun, but the Kindle Wireless Reading Device is simply a convenient book reading device. I’d find that quite useful. It would make reading a lot simpler than carrying around bundles and bundles of books, magazines and newspapers.

Does the new price for the Kindle make you more likely to grab yourself one?

    • Thanks for dropping in Lindy.

The Nook looks great but the Wi-Fi version that you’ve linked wouldn’t work in Australia or many other countries. It uses AT&T hotspots to buy from Barnes and Noble.

Many countries don’t have AT&T or Barnes and Noble.

The Kindle uses 3G in countries other than the US so it’s a lot more universal.

The Nook that’s comparable to the Kindle is $199.

    • I reckon they’re a great idea. There are plenty of things that would take priority over buying a Kindle at the moment but one of these days I may buy one.

I suppose that once you get one you would need to keep it topped up with books but if it got me into a better reading habit that wouldn’t be such a problem.

        • I would love to say yes but money’s too tight right now. ๐Ÿ™

I think the Kindles that Amazon ships to Australia are different to the ones in the US.

  • We got a Kindle for Christmas (at the then much higher price) and it is fantastic. For long periods of reading, I still prefer it to the iPad, because the e-ink is just so clear, and not being backlit, is really easy on the eyes.

The selection of books to buy from Amazon was somewhat limiting at first, but it’s already improved a lot and will just keep getting better from here.

Finally, the Whispersync technology they have which synchronises your books, and your place within the books, is great. It means you can pick up where you left off between the Kindle, iPad, computer, iPhone, etc… Really great stuff.

    • I’ve heard good reports from those who have Kindles.

Can you load eBooks other than those bought through Amazon?

      • Yes you can. You can copy files across via USB. To make it even easier, there is a freeware program called Calibre that can help you manage this process, as well as subscribe to news sites etc.

  • Love my Kindle – so handy & easy to use

I wonder how you’d go lying down on a couch & reading with an iPad? Too heavy I’d suggest

I like to read lounging around!
