Broadway comes to Perth

David Campbell’s On Broadway tour rolled into Perth last night to prove once again that when it comes to all round performers, there are very few in the league of David Campbell.

In an age where it seems that almost every second song on the radio is using electronics to create vocals that no longer sound remotely human, it’s refreshing to experience a performance that showcases the pure power and beauty of the human voice. You don’t need a ‘vocoder’ to play photoshop with a voice as good as Campbell’s. His performance was remarkable, combining incredible energy, timing, power and flawless delivery of each and every note. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a concert before where I’ve wanted to leap out of my seat to give a standing ovation after each and every song.

The orchestra didn’t miss a beat as it provided the perfect landscape for every song, from the subtle beauty of Bring Him Home from Les Miserables to the big band sound of the Guys and Dolls classic, Luck Be a Lady. The show started with a stunning version of Oh What a Beautiful Mornin’ and then carried us through a journey of Broadway classics and even a couple of songs destined for greatness on one of the world’s most famous streets.

If the superb musical feast wasn’t enough, Campbell kept the audience in the palm of his hand as he recounted stories surrounding the recording of the album through to his association with some of the music world’s greatest and most famous players. His humour between songs and his ability to become the character behind each number as soon as the orchestra played the opening notes had the audience on an amazing rollercoaster of emotion throughout.

While the experience of hearing him live can’t be truly captured on CD, I’d encourage you to grab a copy of On Broadway to experience some of the magic that David Campbell brings to some of Broadway’s most loved songs.

David Campbell is one of Australia’s most popular entertainers. A multi-platinum selling recording artist, Campbell has featured on TV, starred in theatre and cabaret, recorded three Top Ten albums, and sold out concert tours from coast to coast. He has a unique legacy as not just one of Australia’s leading musical theatre stars, but also one of the few local performers to have achieved similar success in New York.

Born and raised in Adelaide, David was drawn to the performing arts – initially as an actor. He was performing at the STC and Sydney Opera House by the age of 22, and in 1997 starred in a major revival of Les Miserables in Sydney. Shortly after this, Campbell moved to New York, where his downtown cabaret show attracted major crowds. Due to what Time Out New York described as “the biggest buzz since Barbra Streisand”, Campbell moved his show to the iconic cabaret room Rainbow & Stars, becoming the youngest performer ever to headline the venue.

Campbell’s latest album ‘On Broadway’ sees him interpreting a host of beloved musical theatre songs on record for the first time. The album combines songs from hit shows in which he has starred (Les Miserables, Company, Guys & Dolls, Carousel) with songs from other hit musicals (Oklahoma!, Hello, Dolly!, Chicago, On The Town), and even a world premiere recording from a forthcoming show by Hairspray writers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman – David Campbell bio.

If the concert wasn’t thrilling enough, our family spent a few moments with David Campbell after the concert as he gave generously of his time and attention to dozens of fans in the foyer of the Perth Concert Hall. He immediately recognised Pauline from Facebook and was thrilled to hear that the information Emily received from him helped James to an A for his school project on his favourite singer.

I’ve interviewed him a couple of times via phone in the past so it was wonderful to finally meet David face to face.

He was a family favourite even before last night but I get the feeling there’ll be a lot more of Mr Campbell’s music ringing through our home in the coming months.

Swan Lake on Ice

Swan Lake on IceFour years ago I was blown away by one of the most amazing theatrical shows I’ve ever experienced. It was August 2006 and I was taking Emily out on a dad and daughter date to see The Imperial Ice Stars performing Swan Lake on Ice.

I had visions of the lower area of Burswood Theatre being converted into a huge ice rink. I was quite surprised when we entered the theatre to see that the ice was only covering the regular stage area. The stage is quite sizeable as theatre stages go but how they managed to perform such a spectacular show on such a small area of ice amazed me.

The athleticism, strength and skill was beyond incredible. I find it hard enough to stand up in ice skates but the performers for this show were doing somersaults and all sorts of leaps and jumps.

Not a word was spoken from the stage before, during or after the performance yet the story was told with amazing clarity, skill and humour through the music and the outstanding performances of the cast.

I’m absolutely thrilled that Swan Lake on Ice is back and this time I’ll be taking Pauline and James to see the show.

The Imperial Ice Stars have performed to nearly 3 million people across five continents. The company is a collection of the world’s greatest skaters. The performers between them have won over 250 competition medals. The performance isn’t a ballet on ice; it’s a theatrical masterpiece designed from the ground up to create something that audiences have never before experienced.

Olga Sharutenko performs as Odette in the current production and she joined me in the studio today on 98.5 Sonshine FM.

It was a true delight to speak with Olga and you can hear our conversation by clicking the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

If you ever get the opportunity to see anything by the Imperial Ice Stars, don’t hesitate. You’ll be amazed and you’ll create wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.

For Perth readers, Swan Lake on Ice is being performed at Burswood Theatre from the 13th to the 22nd of August.

Making a Grand Exit

By now you’re very likely to have heard about Steven Slater, the US JetBlue flight attendant who spat the dummy and activated the aircraft’s emergency slide once his flight landed. He abused passengers then grabbed a couple of beers before heading out on the emergency slide.

He was later arrested and could spend up to seven years in prison.

A New York Times report says that after 20 years working as a flight attendant, one final disagreement with a passenger was one disagreement too much for Slater.

One passenger stood up to retrieve belongings from the overhead compartment before the crew had given permission. Mr. Slater instructed the person to remain seated. The passenger defied him. Mr. Slater reached the passenger just as the person was pulling down the luggage, which struck Mr. Slater in the head.

Mr. Slater asked for an apology. The passenger instead cursed at him. Mr. Slater got on the plane’s public-address system and cursed out the passenger for all to hear. Then, after declaring that 20 years in the airline industry was enough, he blurted out, “It’s been great!” He activated the inflatable evacuation slide at a service exit and left the world of flight attending behind.

While what Steven Slater did was illegal and dangerous, many people around the world have made him a hero. I’m guessing that there are a lot of people who feel hostility toward their workplace and wish that they could make an equally grandiose exit.

I’m wondering if you’ve ever made a spectacular exit from a job or if you’ve ever dreamed of it. What have you done or what would you like to have done to say a suitable goodbye to a workplace? I’d love to hear your story or your dreams of what you wish you could do. Just leave a few thoughts in the comments section of this post.

I’m Shouting Coffee

coffee.jpgThey say there’s no such thing as a free lunch but there is a free morning tea.

My apologies to those who don’t live close enough to Perth to take advantage of this but my morning radio programme on 98.5 Sonshine FM will be even tastier during our annual Radiothon next week.

I’m inviting a group of people each day to join me and my morning programme guests for morning tea from Monday the 16th to Friday the 20th of August.

The morning teas will run from 10:00 a.m. to around 11:30 a.m. and should be a lot of fun. It’d be great to catch up and it’s a wonderful opportunity for me to show off my workplace in Como.

We’ve done a similar thing over the last couple of years and had such a wonderful time. The food is always outstanding and the Five Senses coffee is spectacular. On top of that it’s a lot of fun meeting a variety of listeners and letting people see how radio works.

If you’d like to be part of the fun simply click here to email me at my work email address and tell me which day you can join me. If you’re one of the first 20 replies for each day you’ll enjoy a delicious, free morning tea at our Como studios thanks to Five Senses Coffee and 98.5 Sonshine FM.

Why not get a group together and email me the details. I’d love to say hello.
