Shut Down Turn Off

While many people can afford to be a little more conscientious at work, there’s a growing number of employees who are putting a little too much effort into their work at the expense of family, friends and relaxation.

Today is officially the day to start getting a little balance back into life. It’s Go Home on Time Day. While it’s an Australian event there’s probably a lot of relevance for people around the world, especially at this busy time of year.

Go Home on Time Day is an initiative of The Australia Institute and their research gives us some very clear warnings about agreeing to last minute meetings and unpaid overtime. While they’ve focussed on the situation in Australia, it should be a wake up call for workers around the world.

Today is national Go Home On Time Day. As new research by The Australia Institute has found, 6.8 million Australians’ personal time is interrupted by work phone calls or emails, 2.2 million don’t know what time they will be heading home from work when they leave the house in the morning and 4.8 million find it hard to take their annual leave at a time that suits them.

This is creating an unhealthy obsession. Work hours and workplace culture is impacting the health of Australians.

If you need it, you can head to the Go Home on Time Day website to get a ‘Leave Pass’ so that you can officially head out the door at the right time today.

Are you finding that you’re giving more time and effort to your job and less to those areas of your life that really matter? Have you found yourself becoming more loyal to your boss than your family? Do you feel trapped into working longer hours without reward?

Objects on Calendar …

… are Closer than they Appear

It’s the busy end of the year and appointments are rushing towards us faster than a speeding bullet. The busyness continues to ramp up and those dates that once seemed like forever away are now knocking on our door.

As I’ve mentioned before in my post Girls off the Streets, I’m getting ready to head to Bangladesh and India to see the work that SIMaid is doing to rehabilitate girls who have been rescued from forced prostitution.

I can’t believe that our departure is just three weeks away. Three weeks from now I’ll be in the air heading for Malaysia on the way to Bangladesh and India.

If you want to hear a few more details on the trip just click the play button on the audio player below. You’ll hear me chatting with Kieran Johnson of SIMaid who’ll be joining me on the trip.

Dumb Ways to Die

Melbourne’s Metro Trains has launched a viral advertising campaign aimed at reducing the number of train related deaths in the state of Victoria. Rather than the regular, scary, stay-off-the-tracks-it’s-dangerous type approach, they’ve commissioned a catchy little video that is sure to be watched around the world hundreds of thousands of times. (Watch the video below.)

A three-minute animated music video, written by McCann ECD John Mescall, is the centre piece of the campaign. The video highlights the many dumb ways there are to die, with being hit by a train – a very preventable death – among them.

Mescall said: “We’ve got people eating superglue, sticking forks in toasters and selling both their kidneys. But truth is indeed stranger than fiction, and we still couldn’t come up with dumber ways to die than driving around boomgates and all the other things people do to put themselves in harm’s way around trains. The aim of this campaign is to engage an audience that really doesn’t want to hear any kind of safety message – and we think dumb ways to die will.” – Mumbrella

What do you think? Brilliant? Tacky? Insensitive? Funny?

Do you think it’ll actually work to reduce deaths?

Make Mine a Double

Max Galuppo was a little disturbed when he walked past a painting of ‘himself’ in red tights. It wasn’t really him. In fact, it was a portrait from the 16th century.

If you’re not one to find yourself in an art museum, would you change your mind if you actually found yourself in an art museum?

That’s basically what Temple University student Max Galuppo, 20, did when he and his girlfriend Nikkie Curtis visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Nov. 11 and nearly walked past Galuppo’s 16th century double, according to CNN. – Huffington Post

Since that very strange first visit to the art museum he’s been back … in costume … and now looks even more like his ancient double.

Have you ever met a double? Is there someone walking around who looks just like you?

Many years ago I had a resemblance to British comedian Mel Smith. I saw him perform in Perth back in the 80s. I went back stage after the show and had him autograph my program. He didn’t say anything but he did a double take when he saw me, then gave me a strange look. I guess he spotted the likeness too.

How about you? Do you have a double?

Let the Dog Back in the House

So good to hear some new music from Charlie Peacock. This is so different to what most of us are used to from Charlie. Great song and I love the video.
