Looking Back with Andrew Phillips

radio

98five, the radio station where I work, began broadcasting full time on the 26th of January, 1988 and over the past week we’ve been celebrating our 25th Anniversary Year.

Someone who was there in the very beginning, over 25 years ago, was Andrew Phillips. Andrew was an announcer and producer in the early years. On a personal level he was also a good friend and the person who conducted my wedding ceremony back in 1992.

Since leaving 98five Andrew has been involved in a number of ventures in Australia, the U.K. and the U.S.

I chatted to Andrew this week and you can hear our conversation by clicking the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

Looking Back with Chris Falson

98five, the radio station where I work, began broadcasting full time on the 26th of January, 1988 and over the past week we’ve been celebrating our 25th Anniversary Year.

As part of the celebrations we looked back at some of the milestone moments of our history, like the massive concert in 1993 for our fifth birthday.

Sonshine Under the Stars featured local, national and international acts. The concert at Belvoir Amphitheatre was recorded and later broadcast across Australia on Channel Seven. One of the most popular performers on the night was singer-songwriter Chris Falson.

Chris is a singer-songwriter, studio musician, composer, producer, entrepreneur, church-planter, touring artist, published author, teacher and inventor, having co-written several patents on interactive digital media distribution.

With 14 solo albums to date, Chris has performed all around the world for audiences of between one and one hundred thousand. Some of the highlights include Wembley Stadium, The LA Coliseum, Shea Stadium, a bell tower in Burglen and for Pope John Paul’s visit to the US in ’93.

He has written songs and or composed/produced music for film, TV, advertising, gospel choirs, recording artists and musicals. Some of his credits include Win a Date with Tad Hamilton, Without a Trace, Star Trek, Castle, Brothers and Sisters, Las Vegas, Yes Dear, Punk’d, Ron Kenoly, The Oslo Gospel Choir, Avon Breast Cancer, Bloodwork, Tavis Smiley and the CSI franchise.

I spoke to Chris and asked about his memories of Sonshine Under the Stars and of 98five twenty years ago. You can hear our conversation by clicking the play button on the audio player below.

A Simple Transaction

keep-calm-and-sponsor-me

It’s a simple transaction. I promise to ride over 500 kilometres in a week and you promise to sponsor me so that young girls can escape the horror of an abusive past. Do we have a deal?

Childhood should be a time of innocence, yet for millions around the world it’s a time of abuse, exploitation and despair. It’s impossible to imagine the horror a young girl experiences when she’s stolen from her home then raped a dozen times a day by different men to make money for someone else.

Human trafficking enslaves about 27 million people around the world. That is more than the population of Australia. Of these modern day slaves the UN estimates 79% of them are caught up in sexual trafficking. According to “Save the Children” at any one time across the world, around 1.8 million children are being abused through prostitution, child pornography and sex tourism.

I took a trip in December last year to Bangladesh and India to see the excellent work being done through SIMaid’s Girls off the Streets. I was so amazed at the work that is being done to bring hope and healing to young women who have been rescued from sex trafficking that I wanted to do more to help shine some light into some very dark corners of our world.

What I saw on my trip was young women, some very young, who had been sexually exploited and sold into prostitution but who are now growing in confidence as they learn to trust again and develop life skills that will give them a strong foundation for life ahead. Girls off the Streets is giving them a future and importantly, letting them know that they are truly loved.

Morning Cafe Ride for Hope

Next month I’ll be leading 98five’s Morning Cafe Ride for Hope. The ride will involve more than 20 cyclists riding over 500 kilometres from Albany to Perth. As part of the event I’m raising money for SIMaid’s Girls off the Streets. My personal fund raising target is $1500. To reach that goal I need 15 people who are prepared to donate $100. Can you please consider being one of those people? You may even be in a position to give substantially more.

Of course I understand that not everyone can afford to be so generous so please consider giving whatever you can. What can you give? Five dollars? Ten dollars? Fifty dollars? The need is desperate and any donation of $2 or more is tax deductible.

If you’d like to make a difference in the lives of young girls who desperately need your support, simply visit our fundraising page and choose my name from the drop down menu as the participant you’d like to support.

Let me thank you in anticipation of your support.

Who will you ask?

RUOK

Losing someone to suicide is such a devastating experience. There’s no chance to talk things through and work towards a solution. It’s an event that fills the rest of your life with so many ‘what if’ questions.

It’s heart breaking to think that some people believe that death by their own hand is a better alternative than continuing to live.

R U OK? is doing something about the tragedy of suicide. They believe that something as simple as a conversation can make a world of difference. That means that you and I can do something that may save someone’s life.

To help create a world where all people are connected and are protected from suicide, [name of organisation] is urging locals to get involved on R U OK?Day on Thursday 12 September by asking ‘are you ok?’ of friends, family members and colleagues.

The R U OK? Foundation is hosting its 5th national day of action and aims to inspire more Australians to connect with anyone who might be struggling with life.

Today has been named R U OK?Day. It’s a day that reminds us to stay connected to those around us and to make sure that those we love are doing OK in the journey of life.

We want to stop little problems becoming bigger by encouraging all people to help each other through life’s ups and downs. We all experience relationship problems, financial difficulties, stress, illness and death and we can all benefit from the support of those around us.

While R U OK?Day is an Australian initiative, suicide is a world wide tragedy. Who will you reconnect with today? Who needs you to ask if they’re OK today?

If you are suffering any kind of emotional distress and you feel that you need help, R U OK? Day has resources available to help.

Sweet Lorraine

I’m a man.

Men don’t cry.

Unless they watch this video.

I didn’t even get half way through before I started crying like a baby.

Let me know how far you make it without shedding a tear.
