A New Season

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. – Ecclisiastes 3:1

There’s a lot of activity at my house this morning. The day has arrived.

In a few hours I’ll be walking my beautiful daughter down the aisle. It’s all part of a new season, a process that began almost twenty one years ago. The process of letting go.

One of the hardest realisations for a parent is the knowledge that from the moment a child is born you are in a slow, constant, bit by bit, process of helping your child transition from being dependent on you for everything to independence. While Pauline and I will always be Emily’s parents, and will always be there for her and Josh, another part of the letting go process happens today.

We are absolutely thrilled for Emily and Josh. From the earliest days of seeing them together we knew they shared something special. Today they declare their love for each other and their commitment to each other for life.

Today is such an exciting and happy day. We will continue to pray that this will just be the start of a marriage that will continue to grow and that being together will allow Emily and Josh become all they were created to be, both individually and together.

  • My kids are still very young, but this is still a very special post. Thanks for sharing.

  • Congratulations to your daughter and her young man! The letting go is a difficult thing, especially for the mamas I think. I know it was for me and I’m not even an overly gushy kind of mom.
My oldest has been married for 9 years and has two children of his own. Our daughter is out on her own, living with her fiancee and their baby. They will marry this September. Not ideal, but I am glad they are getting married…so many don’t see the need these days…and I have to remember that we all come to the Lord at our own speed.
My daughter was raised in the church and has to find her way back as an adult. She is open to it and things she says tells me she hears the Lord calling. Her fiancee has never had any Christian instruction.
Anyway, I pray the Lord richly blesses your daughter and your whole family today.

    • Your daughter sounds a bit like our second daughter who followed a similar path. They now have 3 children and come to church regularly, every Good Friday and Christmas Eve. We have read Bible stories to the kids and they often say they love Jesus. For quite some time now they’ve been getting mum and dad to say prayers with them at bedtime so you never now what will happen in your daughter’s life!! Keep loving them all and praying is the only suggestion I can make.

  • Congratulations to Emily and Josh. It doesn’t seem that long ago that you were still on the radio and talking about her being at school!! Our eldest married 3 months before her 21st and it’s been over 13 years now and and they have 2 gorgeous girls. My how time flies!!

  • I’ve always taken the approach that my children are on loan to me. God has given them to us to raise and then let go. Our youngest was married 13 years ago yesterday (Monday) and even though they have their ups and downs, we were there if needed. But she still flies free. Our oldest, still single, is free to fly as well. Hope the wedding went well for all of you.
