Recently I’ve seen a few bloggers renting out space on their blogs for other bloggers to advertise. I don’t have anything against the practice but I do wonder sometimes how much of an endorsement it is if it’s paid for in dollars or credits of one kind or another.

While I think it’s fine for others to rent out a bit of space on their blogs, it’s not for me. I’d rather direct anyone who drops in here to blogs that I personally enjoy reading.

That’s why I’m suggesting that you drop in and visit Paula’s blog more about nothing. Just click on the screen shot and have a look around. Paula is originally from South Australia but is currently living in Sydney. Her posts are a bit like mine in that they’re fairly random as far as subject matter is concerned. I like that because I never know what I’m going to find next but I do know it’ll be interesting. Paula is also a regular reader and commenter here at The Journey. Why not drop in and say hello. Tell her I said hi and make sure you add yourself to her Frappr map.

In the coming weeks I’ll introduce you to a few of the blogs I visit regularly. You’ll find that there’s a great cross section of interests. Some of my suggestions will become some of your favourites too but I’m sure that for others, one visit will be enough for you. That’s fine, we all have different tastes and while the blogs I’ll mention are all favourites of mine, I know that you won’t always share my views.

It’s time to vote for your favourite Australian blogs. The 2006 Australian Blog Awards are in full swing and there’s a big variety of categories and lots of fine blogs waiting for your perusal and approval. (I didn’t even get an honourable mention but I’m sure I’ll cope.)

I’m not the kind of person that would want to sway the voting one way or another, but I thought you should know that regular visitor to The Journey, and all round good guy, David from Staypuff, has been nominated in the Best Overseas Australian Blog category. I personally don’t know why you’d vote for any one else but far be it from me to be seen as trying to influence you.

If you want to check out the blogs on offer you’ll have to move reasonably quickly. Voting closes on January the 25th.

They say that you should never discuss sex, religion or politics in polite company. It seems that everyone’s talking about sex and politics, sometimes at the same time, but the verdict is still out on religion.

There is still a lot of people who believe that religion and spiritual belief is something best left as a private matter, whereas others believe that you should shove your belief down everyone’s throat.

As for me? I think that I should be able to share my beliefs but only with sensitivity to the person with whom I’m doing the sharing. To my mind, yelling at someone on a street corner that they’re on their way to hell is probably not a good way to share the love of God.

A recent book, Total Truth by Nancy Pearcey, looks at the place of God in the wider community.

Does God belong in the public arena of politics, business, law, and education? Or is religion a private matter only – personally comforting but publicly irrelevant?

In today’s cultural etiquette, it is not considered polite to mix public and private, or sacred and secular. This division is the single most potent force keeping Christianity contained in the private sphere – stripping it of its power to challenge and redeem the whole of culture.

In Total Truth, Nancy Pearcey offers a razor-sharp analysis of the public/private split, explaining how it hamstrings our efforts at both personal and cultural renewal. Ultimately it reflects a division in the concept of truth itself, which functions as a gatekeeper, ruling Christian principles out of bounds in the public arena.

Things have been hectic over the past few days with Radiothon. We’re almost at the end of this 3 day fundraiser and life can soon return to normal. (Whatever that may be.)
