The Power of Twitter

twitter_logo.pngIf you’re a Twitter skeptic, you might like to reconsider.

Alison Godfrey has written at News.com.au that using Twitter helped her get the home loan she needed. Her article Commonwealth Bank all a-Twitter over mortgage approval tweet, describes how she turned things around very quickly by using less than 140 characters.

It seems that someone at the Commonwealth Bank saw her tweet about her negative banking experience and the head of Commonwealth Bank’s customer service team was in touch with her within an hour and seventeen minutes. Apparently a lot of the big business players are now monitoring social media to see where they’re being mentioned in cyberspace. I’ll have to keep that in mind when our house sells and we need to confirm our financial arrangements.

By the way, if you are using Twitter, feel free to follow me.

You’ll find my Twitter profile here.

If you don’t twitter and you’re wondering what I’m talking about, Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service, that allows users to send and read other users’ updates (otherwise known as tweets), which are posts of up to 140 characters in length. Sort of a cross between text messaging and blogging.

The Dangers of Email

Phil Cooke has published an excellent post regarding the dangers of email.

In his post, When E-Mail Can Get You Into Trouble, he states the case for being very careful with our electronic correspondence before giving a number of practical tips.

I’ve listed the broad headings here but you really need to head to Phil’s post to get the full story. It could save you a lot of future heartache.

1. Never say anything in an e-mail you wouldn’t want shouted from the housetops.

2. Delete your e-mails on a regular basis.

3. Personally, I need to keep certain e-mails related to business, client relationships, deadlines, etc.

4. Never tackle a really tough issue through an e-mail.

5. Don’t feel like you have to answer all your e-mail.

6. Even if you’re not the culprit, you can get implicated just because of slanderous or sensitive e-mails other people send to you.

Throwing it all away

We seem to live in such a disposable society.

When we got our current computer at home some years back we got a scanner and a printer to go with it. The printer worked well for quite some time but developed a couple of minor issues more recently. Nothing we couldn’t work around but annoying at times.

The scanner’s still OK but it can be a little noisy and occasionally temperamental.

We recently ran out of coloured ink for the printer and so Pauline was looking to get a replacement cartridge. The strange thing was she found that with a current cash back offer, it would be cheaper to buy a brand new combined printer and scanner unit complete with ink than to buy a colour cartridge for our old printer.

So the choice was between buying a colour cartridge for a printer that doesn’t work as well as it could and spending less money to replace both the printer and scanner with a brand new unit.

I suppose you know which option we took.

It really doesn’t make any sense does it? The new unit has the advantage of newer technology and it certainly takes up less space than the two previous units.

So many devices these days have dropped in price so much that it’s cheaper to replace items than to have a technician fix even the simplest of faults.

Have you found similar circumstances? Is it a good thing? What are the downsides to our throw away mentality?

By the way, we will be finding a new home for the old items so that they don’t end up clogging up landfill sites.

Excuse me. Can you get out of my photo?

If you want to look at it, you’ll probably find other people are interested too.

I wish we’d known about this particular product before our recent trip to Melbourne and Sydney. In fact, I wish I’d known about it before my trips to India and cycling across Australia.

There’s now a free piece of software called Tourist Remover that will help you remove unwanted people from your photos. Instead of hiring a group of heavies to move people on when you want that classic shot in front of a wonderful tourist attraction, you simply take a series of photos, put them into the programme and it removes all those extras.

From the website, Remove moving objects such as tourists or passing cars from your photos. Take multiple photos from the same scene and the Tourist Remover blends them into a composite photo without any interfering elements.

I would love to have taken some shots to use with the programme when I visited the Taj Mahal. I got some great shots but there were so many people around at the time.
