Falling down the ladder

Want to know who not to tip in the football this weekend?

My tipping has been travelling along reasonably well this year …. until last weekend.

I was in the top half of tippers in The Journey Football Tipping Competition until I had a horror round and picked only two of the eight games. I mentioned right from the start that I’m hopeless at footy tipping so my early good form was more of an exception rather than the rule.

Out of the 14 tippers in the competition, I’m now sitting 10th. Mark Edwards is on top of the tipping ladder.

So, if you want to do well with this week’s tipping, just pick the opposite of who I’ve picked.

I’m tipping Essendon, Port Adelaide, West Coast Eagles, Brisbane Lions, Sydney Swans, Hawthorn, Geelong and Adelaide.

If you’re part of any tipping competition, remember that there’s a game tomorrow so you’ll need to have all your tips in today.

Old McDonald had a stand

It was always going to be a tough game.

Swan Districts played Subiaco on Saturday after having played their last game on the Monday public holiday last week. That gave them a lot less time to recover and prepare to take on the WAFL‘s top side.

I took Emily and James to the game and watched as the black and whites were soundly beaten.

The high point of the day was being able to sit in the McDonald stand. The heritage listed stand has been closed for the last couple of years waiting for repairs. I’ve watched a fair bit of footy from the McDonald stand over the years so it was great to be able to introduce the experience to my kids. I remember the days when the stand would be a sea of black and white and opposition supporters wouldn’t dare take a seat in the impressive wooden grandstand. You would pity any opposition player who had to try to kick for goal in front of the McDonald stand.

Times have changed but there’s still something special about watching local footy, especially when you get the opportunity to jump on the field with your kids at half time and after the game and have a kick

I’m already looking forward to the next game down at Bassendean Oval in a fortnight.

Tipping Update Round One

Footy’s back.

If you follow AFL I hope your team did OK.

I was very pleased to see the Eagles get across the line. They managed to still be one point ahead when the siren sounded.

I wonder how well all the footy tippers are doing. I picked 5 out of 8 and thought I wasn’t doing too well but it seems that a lot of people ended up with similar results. I reckon I’ve got a whole season to catch up.

It’s not too late to join The Journey Footy Tipping Competition. Just click the link then scroll down to the button to join the competition. Three out of the seven that are in the comp so far got 5 correct for round one. Scott Sladden is on top of the tipping ladder thanks to his choice of margin.

I’m now third out of seven in The Journey Footy Tipping Competition but as far as the whole footytips.com.au site goes, I am ranked 48,223 out of 190,080 tippers in the 2007 AFL home and away season. Certainly a lot of ropom for improvement but not too bad.

Ready to give me a kicking?

I proved to everyone in the office last year that I’m hopeless at footy tipping. This year I intend to prove it to the world.

If you follow AFL can I encourage you to try to beat me at tipping for the coming season?

I’ve just signed up at footytips.com.au and so I’ll be able to pit my skills against thousands of other footy fans. The best part is that you can try your skills against mine by signing up to The Journey Footy Tipping Competition. Just follow the link and join up. I promise that by the time the season ends I’ll have come up with a reasonable prize for the best tipster.

Some people spend ages checking the form of each side and thinking through the match ups, the ground, the ladder and a whole range of variables before tipping. I tend to just go ahead and choose then hope for the best.

Go on. Join up. It’ll be fun.

The great thing with footytips.com.au is that you can be part of more than one competition at a time. I was alerted to the possibilities by Geoff so I’ve joined his competition too.

It's all black and white

I’m really looking forward to the football this season.

Every year I think about becoming a member of Swan Districts Football Club. I’ve barracked for the black and whites for as long as I can remember and I usually get to a couple of games each season.

This year will be different. I’m finally a member and so I’ll be making a point of being at as many home games as I can this year. I think that James is looking forward to heading along to the games too.

The great thing with local footy is that it’s so family friendly. Instead of just sitting in your appointed seat, as you do at AFL games, you have opportunity to grab a piece of lawn, throw down a blanket and have a picnic while the game’s on. At quarter time and three quarter time you can wander onto the ground and listen to what the coach is telling his players. At half time you can spend a bit of time kicking a footy around on the oval.

The first game for the competition was played on Saturday and the Swans beat Perth by 9 points. I didn’t get to the game but it was a great start to the season.
