Thank you so very much

It’s been a little quiet here over the past week because I’ve been flat out with 98.5 Sonshine FM’s June Appeal. Sonshine FM’s supporters were exceptionally generous and went above and beyond what was asked of them. We are so thankful.

The June Appeal rasied over $295 000 for the running of the radio station. We are humbled and amazed.

It’s been eight years since the pounding feet and swirling music of Riverdance tapped its way across Australia. Since Riverdance burst onto the world stage it has thrilled millions around the globe.

A national tour opens in Perth tomorrow before heading to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Since Riverdance began performances in Dublin in 1995, the show has played more than 10,000 performances, been seen live by over 22 million people, played in over 350 venues in 40 countries across 5 continents and played to a global television audience of over 2 billion people.

Riverdance – The Farewell Tour 2011 is set to thrill long time fans as well as new admirers. Today in the studio at 98.5 Sonshine FM I spoke to the two lead dancers of the current tour, Maria Buffini and Padraic Moyles.

They were absolutely delightful and it was a wonderful opportunity to hear about the journey of Riverdance over the years. You can hear our conversation by clicking the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

Riverdance will be at the Burswood Theatre in Perth from the 8th to the 13th of March.

Christchurch Earthquake Update

Several days on from the massive quake which has caused so much destruction in Christchurch, I took the opportunity yesterday to update my radio listeners on what was happening in New Zealand.

Tuesday’s 6.3 magnitude tremor is the largest of many aftershocks from the 7.1 magnitude quake in the same area on the 4th of September last year.

At this time 123 people are confirmed dead with 200 still missing and many hundreds injured.

Allan Lee is Director of News and Current Affairs for Rhema Broadcasting Group in New Zealand. He joined me live during my program on 98.5 Sonshine FM the day after the quake as he headed by road to Christchurch. I spoke to Allan again yesterday and he updated me with details from the last couple of days.

Since we last spoke Allan had been into the city of Christchurch and witnessed the devastation as well as travelling through the suburbs and finding out how the people of the area are coping.

You can hear our discussion by clicking the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

I also asked Allan how we should be praying for those caught in the tragic events. He reminded us that while the physical needs are being attended to as quickly as possible, the emotional scars will take many years to heal.

Rescue and Recovery continues in Christchurch

A national state of emergency has been declared in New Zealand following the devastating earthquake that rocked the area surrounding Christchurch yesterday. Horrific images have been beamed into our lounge rooms as the rescue and recovery efforts continue.

Yesterday’s 6.1 magnitude tremor is the largest of many aftershocks from the 7.1 magnitude quake in the same area on the 4th of September last year. At this time 75 people are confirmed dead with 300 missing and many hundreds injured.

Allan Lee is Director of News and Current Affairs for Rhema Broadcasting Group in New Zealand. He joined me live during my program on 98.5 Sonshine FM this morning as he headed by road to Christchurch.

We talked about the feeling in New Zealand today as people continue to come to terms with the tragedy and the dangerous rescue efforts as aftershocks continue to shake buildings that are already on the brink of collapse.

You can hear our discussion by clicking the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

I also asked Allan how we should be praying for those caught in the tragic events. He reminds us that while the physical needs are being attended to as quickly as possible, the emotional scars will take many years to heal.

Albany to Perth 2010 Days Five and Six

Last night I slept in my own bed. There really is something wonderful about being home but the journey has certainly been worth it.

I was away from home for just over a week and in that time I cycled 548.77 kilometres. (That was 516.33 kilometres of ‘official’ riding and a couple of short training rides in Albany before we started.)

We met some amazing people and shared stories of many who have faced and battled cancer.

The team was incredible. From our junior cheer squad to the riders and the amazing support crew, everyone played their part to make the event an incredible success. We cycle up and down hills in extremely hot temperatures, all determined to squeeze every drop of energy out of our bodies for the cause.

I’ll be writing more about the ride in coming days.

We’ve played our part. Now it’s your turn.

If you haven’t had opportunity to donate so far, please follow this link. Your contribution will go directly to Cancer Council Western Australia and to the amazing work they do. Donations of $2 and above are tax deductible in Australia.
