Radiothon 2010

SFM_Logo.jpgI’m not sure how much posting I’ll be doing over the next week as I’ll be pretty busy with this year’s Sonshine FM Radiothon.

Radiothon will be 5 Days focussed on providing the funds needed to provide new infrastructure and contribute towards daily costs for 98.5 Sonshine FM.

We’ve set our target for this year at $150 000. We’re excited about what surprises this year’s Radiothon will bring.

Visit the Sonshine FM website for more details.

Radiothon started at 7:00 a.m. today and will conclude at 6:00 p.m. this Friday.

I’m Shouting Coffee

coffee.jpgThey say there’s no such thing as a free lunch but there is a free morning tea.

My apologies to those who don’t live close enough to Perth to take advantage of this but my morning radio programme on 98.5 Sonshine FM will be even tastier during our annual Radiothon next week.

I’m inviting a group of people each day to join me and my morning programme guests for morning tea from Monday the 16th to Friday the 20th of August.

The morning teas will run from 10:00 a.m. to around 11:30 a.m. and should be a lot of fun. It’d be great to catch up and it’s a wonderful opportunity for me to show off my workplace in Como.

We’ve done a similar thing over the last couple of years and had such a wonderful time. The food is always outstanding and the Five Senses coffee is spectacular. On top of that it’s a lot of fun meeting a variety of listeners and letting people see how radio works.

If you’d like to be part of the fun simply click here to email me at my work email address and tell me which day you can join me. If you’re one of the first 20 replies for each day you’ll enjoy a delicious, free morning tea at our Como studios thanks to Five Senses Coffee and 98.5 Sonshine FM.

Why not get a group together and email me the details. I’d love to say hello.

Heroin to Hope

Jade LewisAt 15, Jade Lewis was an aspiring young athlete. By 18 she was a heroin addict.

Many people told her she was hopeless and that she would never amount to anything. After being arrested for drug related charges she knew she had to do something to change her life. At the age of 22 Jade entered the Teen Challenge programme and was able to leave drugs behind. She has since dedicated her life to helping people of all ages, walks and professions to make changes to their own lives. Today she is an author, motivational speaker, mentor and role model to many.

Jade will be telling her story at a community drug prevention presentation in Midland, Western Australia on Sunday the 30th of May. Jade joined me on 98.5 Sonshine FM to talk about her story and the seminar.

You can hear part of Jade’s story by clicking the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

Stan Walker on Compassion Day

2009 Australian Idol Stan WalkerOn Sunday 22 November 2009, 19 year old Stan Walker’s life changed forever. He became the 2009 Australian Idol.

His first single Black Box was an instant hit. His album Introducing Stan Walker was released late last year. His new single Unbroken has just been released and is receiving airplay around Australia.

International superstar Michael Bublé was one of the guest mentors for Australian Idol 2009 and after meeting Stan and hearing him sing he said, “That voice is like God kissed his throat. It’s hard when you’re a singer and you meet a better singer than you and you have to come up and mentor them.” After one performance during Idol he left Joel and Benji Madden of Good Charlotte speechless. Joel said that listening to Walker sing made him want to sing R&B music and Benji said he’d watch him perform wheather he won the competition or not. Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy told Stan that if he had no where to go after Idol to give him a call.

Stan joined me on the phone this morning on 98.5 Sonshine FM to talk about his new single as well as his very recent trip to earthquake affected Haiti.

Today is Compassion Day so Stan took the opportunity to urge listeners to sponsor a child through Compassion Australia. You can hear our conversation by clicking on the play button of the audio player at the bottom of this post.

Talking to Australian Idol Stan Walker

2009 Australian Idol Stan WalkerOn Sunday 22 November 2009, 19 year old Stan Walker’s life changed forever. He became the 2009 Australian Idol.

Since then life has been a frantic mix of recording, performing and promotional appearances. His first single Black Box was an instant hit. His album Introducing Stan Walker was released in early December.

How good is he really?

Stan joined me in the studio this morning on 98.5 Sonshine FM. You can hear our conversation by clicking on the play button of the audio player at the bottom of this post.

We spoke about a range of subjects including his music, staying grounded, and growing up within a broken and dysfunctional home. Stan has been quoted as saying that he wants people to connect with more than just his music.

I really want to represent Polynesian people, Aboriginal people, and other ethic groups of people who have to deal the same kind of issues in their communities, but at the very same time I also want to represent all the young Australians who may also be finding things a little more difficult than others. It’s not about where you’re from, it’s about who you are – my goal is to show people that through the struggle there is definitely a brighter future on the other side. I’m one of those broken people who’ve gained everything through my experience, and I want to show everyone that it’s possible if you stay true to who you are. I really believe that talent can take you so far, but it’s your character that can take you all the way.

Stan Walker is someone who’s not afraid to speak very openly about his faith and the place of God in his life. He talked about his decisions being based on prayer and the wise advice of church leaders and mentors.
