An interview with Chris Murphy

cm.JPGChris Murphy is best known for being one of the most exciting performers during “Australian Idol” in 2006 but he’s been thrilling music lovers for well over a decade.

As well as being an energetic front man for Murphy’s Lore and now the Chris Murphy Band he’s one of Perth’s most prominent solo performers.

Whether it’s loud and electric or solo and unplugged, Chris Murphy delights audiences whenever and wherever he plays.

The Chris Murphy Band helped around 20 000 people get in the party mood for Australia Day on Monday as part of the Town of Bassendean Australia Celebrations and Fireworks. Chris joined me in the studio last week on 98.5 Sonshine FM to talk about the upcoming event. We chatted about everything from Australian Idol to his work supporting worthy causes. Chris even played a couple of acoustic songs live during the interview.

Wes Carr in Perth

WesCarr.jpgWes Carr is getting used to being in the spotlight.

Certainly no stranger to performing, Wes has been writing and playing his own music for year, but after winning the 2008 series of Australian Idol, he’s receiving a lot more attention.

On the first day his debut single, You, was available for download, it was number 1 on the iTunes track chart with almost two and a half thousand downloads which made the single Sony Music’s biggest track download ever in one day.

While winning the number one spot in Australian Idol has never been a guarantee of future success, you kind of get the feeling that we’re going to be hearing from Wes Carr for a long time to come.

Wes was my guest today during my Morning Programme on 98.5 Sonshine FM. It was a real pleasure to chat to him on the phone this morning while he was in Perth for a promotional visit. He promises to return for a concert next year after his album is released.

If you want to hear what Wes had to say this morning when I spoke to him, just click the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

Ten things I've done you probably haven't

So let’s get the conversation going.

I’ve been so busy recently with moving offices that I haven’t had the opportunity to reply to many of the comments readers have left here or get involved in conversations through this blog. I thought I’d try to spark things by listing a few things I’ve done that you probably haven’t.

While you may find one or two things on the list that you’ve done I sincerely doubt that you’ve done all ten. 🙂

I’m hoping that you’ll come up with a few of your own in the comments section of this post or that you’ll write a similar post on your own blog and link back here. If you’ve done any of the things on my list let me know.

I’ll just list the ten things and leave it to you. If you have questions about any of the items in the list, feel free to ask.

Ten things I’ve done you probably haven’t

1.  Cycled across Australia five times.

2.  Escaped a country when rioting and looting in the capital became widespread. (Haiti)

3.  Hand fed a rhinocerous.

4.  Stood on stage with Mikhail Gorbachev.

5.  Cycled from Agra (home of the Taj Mahal) to Delhi in India.

6.  Met General ‘Stormin’ Norman Schwarzkopf.

7.  Interviewed at least seven Australian Idol finalists and winners.

8.  Preached at a cathedral in India.

9.  Been mentioned at least twice in Australia’s Federal Parliament.

10. Cycled up and down an aisle at K-Mart in Miami, Florida.

So there you are. Now it’s over to you.

Carl Riseley

carlriseley.jpgCarl Riseley grew up on the Gold Coast in Queensland. and reckons that he held his first trumpet when he was around the age of four.

He played the trumpet throughout school, but it was only towards the end of high school that he really felt he could make a career from his talent. When a good friend joined the Royal Australian Navy as a trombone player, Carl was inspired to do the same and signed up the following year as a full-time musician in the Navy.

Fast forward to last year’s Australian Idol and Carl was the surprise find of the competition – not because he’s not incredibly talented – but because his style certainly didn’t fit the usual Idol mould. He made it to the top three in that competition and his new album The Rise is now in stores.

He joined me on the line during my morning programme on 98.5 Sonshine FM today.

Hearts break across Australia

DeanGeyerRodneyOlsen.JPGIf you listen carefully you can hear the fragile hearts of teenage girls across Australia breaking and crumbling as they hear the news that Australian Idol finalist, Dean Geyer, is engaged.

The love of his life is one half of The Veronicas, Lisa Origliasso.

News.com.au broke the news a short time ago with their story Veronicas’ twin and Idol engaged.

The couple, who have been together for a year, released a statement today to announce their news.

“Dean Geyer and Lisa Origliasso, together with their families, are delighted to announce they are engaged,” the statement said.

“The couple have been together since April 2007 and are thrilled to share their news.”

The photo in this post is of Dean and me when he joined me in the studio at 98.5 Sonshine FM in June last year. You can hear the interview from that visit by clicking the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.
