I’ve Been Framed

SneakingDuck

When I reached that certain age when eyes just don’t do what they always did I was disappointed, but little did I realise it would just be an opportunity to indulge in some great ‘face fashion’.

After my recent eye test I needed to order new glasses so I headed straight to the Sneaking Duck website. I had my eye on a pair of Due Diligence frames for a while and finally, with prescription in hand, I could make my order. Not many days later my new glasses arrived …. along with a small duck. (Click the photo above for a closer look.)

Fashion’s a funny thing (not that I’m an expert on fashion by any stretch of the imagination) because we like to be seen wearing the current look, without wearing exactly the same as everyone else. That’s where Sneaking Duck wins every time. Their designs are definitely fashionable but not mass produced, so you’re not likely to turn up somewhere wearing the same frames as every other person in the room.

We love cool frames and we love having a pair for every mood. We’re tired of having one mega-expensive pair we wear until they break. In just a few clicks, Sneaking Duck allows you to build a wardrobe of frames to match every outfit.

Sneaking Duck was founded by Mike, Michael, Mark and Jodie.

Mike, Michael and Jodie wear glasses pretty much all the time, and they have a pair of frames for every look. In their business travels they’d ritualistically dedicate time to buying new frames – designs were exciting, prices were great and it made them the coolest nerds in the lab.

I think I might have to look at some prescription sunnies next time.

Why is everything blurry?

A lot of the time when people talk about things just dropping in your lap it’s a good thing. When it’s the left lens of your reading glasses, it’s not so good.

I was at my desk at work a little while ago when I put my glasses on only to have a lens make a leap for the desk then into my lap. I took my glasses off again and tried to see what had happened. Unfortunately, without my glasses I could only see the fuzzy outline of some spectacles in my hand.

I then used the fallen lens as a monocle to survey the situation. It looked like I was missing one of those tiny little screws.

I got up very carefully, all the time looking for anything dropping to the ground. Nothing.

Have you ever tried wearing reading glasses with just one lens? Weird stuff. I could have tried making it through the day with one eye working but I just know I would have eneded up with a headache pretty quickly.

Seeing as I was about to begin my radio program I knew that there wasn’t time to go anywhere to get the glasses fixed and my eyes are so bad these days I didn’t like the idea of broadcasting all moring without being able to read. I was just in the process of asking someone to take the glasses to the nearest optometrist when they spotted something interesting. The screw wasn’t missing. It was just too small for me to see, even with my monocle.

Thankfully everything’s back together and I can see again.

It really seems like such a short time ago that I had remarkably good eyesight. I could read tiny, tiny print and I could read signs way off in the distance that other people couldn’t even see. Sadly that’s no longer the case. Age continues to take its toll.

I can’t see clearly now

eye_glasses.jpgJust a few years back I didn’t need them at all. Now I can hardly get by without them.

I made a break in my routine today. For about the fifth time this year I drove to work rather than cycling. I needed to bring some things to work and take some home so it made sense.

Unfortunately that meant that I didn’t follow my regular routine and so I forgot my reading glasses.

If I hold my head in the right position and squint every now and then I can read most things – if they’re in large print and across the other side of the room.

I guess I should hunt down my old reading glasses and leave them in here just in case this ever happens again.

I’ve only needed glasses for about three years and this is the first time I’ve forgotten to bring them to work so I’m doing OK so far.

Years ago when I was working for the Education Department I’d regularly have to try to break into cars to retrieve keys. Teachers would be visiting the resource centre where I worked for in-service courses. They were out of their routine and that would mean that they’d sometimes do things out of the ordinary, such as locking their keys in their car.

Have you ever stopped to think about how much a regular routine helps your day? Do you find yourself doing strange things when you’re out of routine?

I may have to make a new year’s resolution to never forget my glasses again.

Getting Older

eye_glasses.jpgThere are several ways you can tell that you’re getting old. One of the things for me was having to start wearing reading glasses a couple of years ago … well I think it was a couple of years back … it’s hard to remember such things when you’re getting older.

I know that whether or not you wear glasses isn’t always down to aging, many young people need glasses for various reasons, but the optometrist I dealt with told me in my case it was all down to aging eyes not being able to focus like they used to. Sadly I now think I need stronger glasses.

Still … that doesn’t mean that I’m getting older … but maybe … just maybe … the fact that I left the radio studio a few minutes ago to get my glasses … went to my desk … and came back without them could be a clue. The fact that I almost did it twice may well be confirmation.
