Kindle Fire versus iPad

Amazon has done very well with their Kindle eReaders but they’ve now turned up the heat on the iPad with the Kindle Fire.

The Kindle Fire is much more than a colour version of the popular Kindle. There’ll be apps, games. thousands of movies and TV shows, music and web browsing. Some are suggesting that the new tablet will provide new competition for Apple’s iPad.

The new device is being released in the US on the 15th of November but Amazon is taking advance orders now.

The imminent release of the Kindle Fire means that other Kindles in the Amazon range will become more affordable. There will even be other Kindles joining the range.

There are two types of companies: those that work hard to charge customers more, and those that work hard to charge customers less. Both approaches can work. We are firmly in the second camp.

We are excited to announce four new products: the all-new Kindle for only $79, two new touch Kindles – Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G – for $99 and $149, and a new class of Kindle – Kindle Fire – a beautiful full color Kindle for movies, TV shows, music, books, magazines, apps, games, web browsing and more, for only $199.

These are high-end products – the best Kindles we’ve ever made. Kindle and Kindle Touch have the most-advanced E Ink display technology available, and the 3G Kindle Touch adds free 3G wireless – no monthly fees and no annual contracts. Kindle Fire brings everything we’ve been working on at Amazon for 15 years together into a single, fully-integrated experience for customers – instant access to Amazon’s massive selection of digital content, a vibrant color IPS touchscreen with extra-wide viewing angle, a 14.6 ounce design that’s easy to hold with one hand, a state-of-the-art dual core processor, free storage in the Amazon Cloud, and an ultra-fast mobile browser – Amazon Silk – available exclusively on Kindle Fire.

We are building premium products and offering them at non-premium prices.

The announcement of the new range has already caused a rise in Amazon’s share price.

I’m happy to stick with my original iPad with its larger screen but I’m wondering whether this new device and its competetive pricing will put pressure on Apple to review iPad prices.

Technology Stole My Life

One of the blogs I always enjoy reading is Challies.com.

Tim Challies is about to release a book about how our increased ability to use technology to connect with people all over the world we’re losing touch with those closest to us. It asks the questions whether all this connection to technology is good for our souls.

Check out the video above and see if it resonates with you.

Two weeks from today is the official release date for my book The Next Story: Life and Faith After the Digital Explosion. And if you’re planning to order the book (and really, you should, don’t you think?), it makes some sense to pre-order it before the official release date.

If you are going to be reading it in Kindle format, you will definitely want to order ASAP. For every 200 people who order on Kindle, the price will drop by $1 (and since you’re not charged until the day it actually releases, you’ll get those savings). Other ebook platforms will also get those savings, but not until the book actually releases. The price has already fallen and I’d love to see it fall some more.

The Next Story: Life and Faith After the Digital Explosion will be available in hardcover or Kindle version.

So, do you find that you’re ‘connected’ to more people than ever but that technology is stealing your life?

New Kindle Only $139

I wrote just over a month ago about a big price drop for Amazon’s Kindle.

Now they’ve gone one better. They’ve not only slashed the price, they updated the product. The latest Kindle Wireless Reading Device is only $139.

The all new Kindle is smaller, lighter, faster and with 50% better contrast. Check out the New Kindle Wireless Reading Device here.

Amazon Kindle now only $189

amazonkindle.jpgAmazon’s Kindle Wireless Reading Device has dropped it’s price again so it’s now more affordable wherever you are in the world. The basic model is now only $189. Check out the new prices here.

The discount comes as other eBook readers also drop prices but the Kindle price is even lower than its direct competitors.

With this new Kindle, you can get your books, newspapers, and magazines delivered while at home or abroad in over 100 countries.

At Amazon, we’ve always been obsessed with having every book ever printed, and we know that even the best reading device would be useless without a massive selection of books. Today, the Kindle Store has more than 350,000 books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs available. This is just the beginning. Our vision is to have every book ever printed, in any language, all available in under 60 seconds on Kindle. We won’t stop until we get there.

Whether you prefer biographies, classics, investment guides, thrillers, or sci-fi, thousands of your favorite books are available, including 104 of 112 books currently found on the New York Times® Best Seller list. New York Times Best Sellers and most new releases are $9.99, and you’ll find many books for less.

With my birthday just a month away today, so I’ve now added a Kindle to my wish list. I don’t know that anyone’s likely to buy me one but a man can hope.

The latest price drop seems to be in response to the release of the iPad. I got to play around with an iPad a few days ago and while I was impressed, I can’t see myself paying the price they’re asking at the moment. I’m sure that an iPad would be fun, but the Kindle Wireless Reading Device is simply a convenient book reading device. I’d find that quite useful. It would make reading a lot simpler than carrying around bundles and bundles of books, magazines and newspapers.

Does the new price for the Kindle make you more likely to grab yourself one?

Kindle Price Drop

amazonkindle.jpgGreat news. The Kindle Wireless Reading Device has dropped it’s price so it’s now more affordable wherever you are in the world. You can check out the new prices here.

I’ve loved the idea of the Kindle ever since Amazon started selling them, but being in Australia meant that I couldn’t buy one when they were first released.

When they did become available in Australia, and many other countries, the price was still a sticking point for me. If the price has been holding you back too, you may be interested to know that they’ve dropped in price considerably. I imagine it might have something to do with the iPad becoming available.

Would you ever switch to reading electronically or do you still prefer the feel of the paper and the experience of turning the pages?
