National Camera Day

I’ve just found out that it’s National Camera Day. It’s not a day that’s celebrated in Australia but I reckon any day is a good day to ‘focus’ on taking photos.

Even without knowing that the 29th of June is a day to celebrate cameras, I did manage to grab a snap or two while I was out and about this afternoon.

Here’s a photo I took of a magnificent old tree in Kings Park, overlooking Perth, Western Australia.

A Tourist at Home

EH

When was the last time you were a tourist in your own town?

On Sunday afternoon my family headed into Kings Park to enjoy some live music from Adam Hall.

After the concert we took the opportunity to wander around taking photos of the wildflowers and then a few shots across the city.

Yesterday I went cycling with a group of friends and we ended up riding along the coast through Warnbro and back up to Rockingham. It’s so beautiful through there but it’s been so long since I’ve enjoyed the sights of the area. It’s so close and I really should take the time to visit more often.

How about you? Are there places that you only visit if you have interstate or overseas visitors with you or do you do some touristy things from time to time? Is it about time you played tourist in your own city?

If I were to visit your corner of the world, what would you take me to see?

Human Nature with WASO

Human_Nature.jpgLife is starting to settle down to normal after a long weekend in Western Australia.

We headed out to the magnificent Kings Park and Botanic Gardens on Saturday evening to see Human Nature with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.

There were a couple of rain showers before the guys made it to the stage so there was a little concern that the weather would set in and the concert would have to be cancelled. Thankfully nothing more came of it so we were able to stay dry for the rest of the night.

WASO is great no matter what they’re playing and having Human Nature singing their hits with the backing of such a superb orchestra made for a magical evening. All in all it was a fabulous family night out.

As I was sitting on our blanket I realised that I just can’t sing like those guys, I don’t look that good in a suit, and I certainly could never manage the moves that they do. I guess that’s why they sell truckloads of albums and I don’t.

Giant Boab Tree Heads South

boab.jpgHave you heard that the plan to move an ancient boab tree to Perth has run into a few problems?

The tree apparently weighs almost three times as much as first thought. The bottle-shaped boab tree is being removed and transplanted 3 200 km from Warmun, in Western Australia’s Kimberley region, to Kings Park in the heart of Western Australia’s capital.

The 750 year old tree was estimated to weigh 14 tonnes. Instead, it was found to weigh a massive 37.2 tonnes. The project team has now found a bigger truck – a much bigger truck. The tree should arrive in Perth this weekend.

The tree is being moved due to roadworks in the area and it’s the first time that such a mature tree has been transported over such a distance.

Digging up the tree proved much harder than predicted too as it was embedded in granite rock, making removal extremely difficult.

They say that the boab is expected to live at least another 750 years after its journey and transplant. That’s not a bad innings for a tree. If I can get something to live for more than a couple of months in my garden I reckon I’m doing OK.
