When your god dies

USmoney.jpgWhether you believe in a supreme being or not you’d have to admit that humans have an inbuilt desire to worship. You might not call it worship but we do have a strong tendency to raise people or things high on the pedestals of our desire.

We worship other people, money, success and many other things in our lives. We give ourselves completely and often stake our lives on whatever it is that becomes our god.

The worldwide financial crisis has brought the death of god for many people across the globe. Many people who have put their trust in riches are now scrambling to keep their heads above water. Even those who would have said that money and financial security weren’t the most important things in their lives have started to see just what a hold it has had on them.

This story tells us about a man who found the current crisis too much too handle. Without the trappings of riches he felt it was better that his entire family was dead, so he killed his wife, his three sons and his mother-in-law before taking his own life. Police found three letters he had left in the family home detailing his financial difficulties. What a terrible tragedy. It’s so sad to think that someone believed so strongly that death was better than life without money that he threw away so many precious lives.

I’d have to admit that Bono has given the current crisis a bit of perspective that’s hard to argue against.

It is extraordinary to me that you can find $700 billion to save Wall Street and the entire (Group of Eight nations) can’t find $25 billion to save 25,000 children who die every day of preventable disease and hunger.

I guess it’s a reminder to us once again to decide carefully where we choose to put our trust. When our god is money, we will be let down. When our god is other people, they will fail us. When our god is success, we will find it slipping through our fingers.

What or who will you choose to worship?

Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.1 Timothy 6:17

Appearances can be deceiving

bag.jpgA great example today of why we shouldn’t base our judgements on appearances.

A Perth family from the suburb of Shelley ignored a plain, brown paper bag for several days. It sat on their front lawn, ignored by the wife who first spotted it and her husband who also thought nothing of it.

When the son decided to peek inside he found the bag contained $10 000.

News.com.au reported the find in their story Family finds $10 000 cash on front lawn. The police are now trying to find the owner of the cash.

The man who found the money took it to Cannington police station yesterday, a police spokeswoman said.

He told officers his wife spotted the bag a few days ago on the front lawn of their home at Shelley, in Perth’s south, but they thought nothing of it until their son looked inside.

I wonder how many times we ignore those things that seem plain and ordinary and miss out on something valuable.

We're in the money

Sometimes it all comes at once.

My bike needs a major repair. The shifter lever needs replacing. The problem is one small, broken spring but they don’t sell the spring so I need to find a second hand shifter or buy a complete replacement. Ouch! (If you have a spare Tiagra 9 speed shifter please send it my way.)

Our computer is an old Celeron 900 which has worked its little CPU out for years for us. Over the past few months it’s been having more and more issues. Today it doesn’t want to work at all. I’m hoping to get it running again tonight but we really need to bite the bullet and get a new computer. I’ve recently taken on some extra work which requires me to have a reliable computer at home.

As you probably already know, I’m flying out of Australia this weekend with Compassion Australia to see their work in Haiti. Flights, accommodation and meals are looked after but there are always extra expenses so I’ll need some extra cash.

On top of that there’s all the usual efforts to balance a very tight budget.

Just when I was getting ready to tear my hair out I was thrown a lifeline. This email arrived in my inbox.

Honesty still alive and well

You’ve probably heard about the American guy who picked up what he thought was rubbish on a footpath because he wanted to jot down a phone number. On closer inspection, Reggie Damone found it was an envelope containing a cheque worth $US185,000 ($A212,000).

Reggie works at a McDonald’s and receives government help due to his low wage but he says he didn’t think twice about trying to cash the cheque. Instead, the 47 year old took a bus to the bank and returned the it to the niece of the person whose name was on the cheque.

She thanked him with a $50 reward. I reckon a little more than $50 would have been nice for returning such a large amount but I’m sure that Reggie appreciated it. He said that although he knew the money could pay his rent and other bills for a long time, he was never tempted to try to cash it and splurge. Reggie said he remembered his mother’s words: If you take something, you lose three times that amount – and if you do something good, something good comes back to you.

Nice to know there are still honest people in out communities.

What would you have done with the cheque? If it was your cheque would you have slipped Reggie a little more than a fifty?

I wonder if he ever did get to write down that telephone number.

Money Money Money

MoneyIt’s always nice to win something and money’s always a pretty good prize.

I’ve just picked up $25 cold hard cash from Thor Schrock. Thanks Thor. He was running a competition to rename his blog. The blog focusses on using current technology to maximise marketing.

I suggested the name Marketing Bytes which Thor liked the best from all the suggestions submitted but he still preferred to go with his own idea of Peanuts to Profits.

$25 may not be a huge amount but it’s a big help at this time of year when money tends to be even tighter than normal.

If you’re looking to pay off some of your holiday bills Thor’s Secret Classroom competition may be to your liking. He’s giving away $1800 in cash and prizes with first prize being $1000 cash.

You can find all the details here.
