58: The Film

I saw an amazing movie last week. I had the honour of being at a screening of 58: The Film.

It’s a powerful movie that challenges us to believe that we can end extreme poverty. Over the past few decades we’ve seen dramatic changes to the numbers of people touched by poverty but there’s still a massive job ahead of us. The startling thing is, we have all we need to end poverty. We simply need the will to do something. We need to start taking poverty personally.

58: The Film tells the inspiring true story of the global Church in action, from the slums of Kenya and the quarries of India to the streets of New York. It’s a journey that confronts the brutality of extreme poverty and introduces those who are already living out the true fast of Isaiah 58.

To: 58: The Film is confronting, inspiring and eye-opening—but 58: is so much more. It is our hope that everyone who sees the film will be moved to take action. There are some clear ways for you to get involved with Compassion and 58: partners Micah Challenge and Stop the Traffik.

By visiting the 58: The Film website you can find out how you can be part of a movement to see poverty end in our generation. It’s very easy to run your own screening of the movie which will help mobilise and equip people to do something about the injustices our world is facing.

Today on my Morning Cafe radio program I spoke to Matt Darvas of Compassion Australia about the film and the impact it can have as we play our part in bringing justice to more people around the world.

Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke? —Isaiah 58:6

What’s the one thing you can’t live without?

You can often discover what people truly value when you find out what means the most to them. What is it that we believe we can’t live without?

More 4 Me is a documentary that follows film maker Lincoln Fenner of Creation Box Films through 7 countries across 5 continents as he asks everyone from actors and models to orphans and street sweepers the same simple question; “What’s the one thing you can’t live without?”

Are people in places like New York, London, Los Angeles and even Perth really that different from those living in a Kenyan orphanage, the slums of Nairobi or a remote Cambodian village? Is life really all about getting More 4 Me? Lincoln joined me in the studio this morning on 98.5 Sonshine FM.

Lincoln has been making films since 1999. His 2005 short film Another Chance was part of the Official Selection at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival and it screened in Manhattan that same year.

He holds a Diploma in Film Making (2001-2002) from the New York Film Academy (where he studied at their Universal Studios, Los Angeles school). In 2000, he graduated in London’s West End with a Foundation Certificate from Panico Films (now London Film Academy).

We spoke about the film and about the many answers people give to that one simple question. You can hear our conversation by clicking the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

What would your answer be? What is the one thing that you couldn’t live without?

I’d love to hear from you. Please leave a comment or two in the comments section of this post.

Final Days for Toy Story 3 Prize

Toy Story 3This is just a quick reminder that the competition to win some amazing Toy Story 3 merchandise and a double pass to see the movie is closing soon.

Toy Story 3 is in cinemas now and thanks to Disney Pixar, one Australian reader of RodneyOlsen.net will win a double pass to see the latest Toy Story movie and some Toy Story 3 goodies.

Just head to the post Win a Toy Story 3 Prize for all the details and the opportunity to enter.

The prize pack arrived from Disney Pixar a few days ago and my only disappointment is that I can’t win it. The prize is an Australian double inseason ticket to see Toy Story 3, a fantastic Toy Story 3 T-shirt (It’s an XL so it would even fit me.), a Toy Story 3 mug (Which has really cool heat sensitive ink, which means you only see the full detail when it’s full of your favourite hot drink.) and a book of Toy Story 1 and 2 (These books are the big, colourful hard cover kind for the kids).

Disney Pixar’s Toy Story 3 is in cinemas now and everyone is raving about it. I’ve seen several reviews from people who are not into animation or ‘kids films’ who say that this movie is a must see.

I’ll be naming a winner on Monday so you need to enter as soon as possible. (Entries close at 8:00 a.m. Monday the 5th of July Western Australian time.)

I want to let everyone know they have chance to win so if you link to the original post from your blog, Facebook or Twitter, you’ll get an extra entry. Just let me know in the comments section of the post Win a Toy Story 3 Prize how you’ve publicised the competition.
