Radiothon 2011

SFM_Logo.jpgI’m not sure how much posting I’ll be doing over the next week as I’ll be pretty busy with this year’s 98.5 Sonshine FM Radiothon.

Radiothon will be 5 days focussed on providing the funds needed to secure the financial future of 98.5 Sonshine FM.

As well as our ongoing support we rely on funds raised mostly from two major events each year, our June Appeal, and Radiothon. Our supporters really blew us away with the response to the June Appeal this year but now we need to secure our financial future with Radiothon 2011.

We’ve set our target for this year at $215 000. We’re excited about what surprises this year’s Radiothon will bring.

Free Morning Tea

coffee.jpgThey say there’s no such thing as a free lunch but there is a free morning tea.

My apologies to those who don’t live close enough to Perth to take advantage of this but my Morning Café radio program on 98.5 Sonshine FM will be even tastier during our annual Radiothon next week.

I’m inviting a group of people each day to join me and my morning programme guests for morning tea from Monday the 14th to Friday the 18th of November.

The morning teas will run from 10:00 a.m. to around 11:30 a.m. and should be a lot of fun. It’d be great to catch up and it’s a wonderful opportunity for me to show off my workplace in Como.

We’ve done a similar thing over the last couple of years and had such a wonderful time. The food from Miss Maud is always outstanding and the coffee is spectacular. On top of that it’s a lot of fun meeting a variety of listeners and letting people see how radio works.

An Inspirational Woman

Denise is an inspiration. She’s in her seventies but you’d never guess it.

Denise volunteers for a number of organisations including Cancer Council WA. She helps with afternoon teas for cancer patients every Wednesday afternoon. She downplays her role but what she does goes way beyond serving a cuppa and a biscuit. You can hear her story by clicking the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post. The interview was just one of the chats I had during my radio program this morning.

Today was the third day of riding for the Morning Cafe Cancer Ride. We have a team of thirteen cyclists riding from Albany to Perth to raise funds for Cancer Council WA and to tell stories like Denise’s.

The last couple of days have been very warm but the team has worked well. The country hospitality has been incredible and tonight in Wagin I had the biggest steak I’ve ever eaten. A very worthy reward for a warm afternoon on the bike.

We’re looking forward to making it home on Saturday but there’s a lot of work to be done between now and then. The weather over the next we days is likely to be less than helpful. There are storms forecast so we’re likely to have a couple of wet days in the saddle.

With a big day to come I think I should get some sleep now.

Oh …. by the way. The team has suffered three flat tyres so far. One on my front wheel and two on my back wheel. I’m hoping that I’ve had my share of punctures and that my tyres will remain inflated for the rest of the journey.

Perth Royal Show 2011

It’s on again.

The Perth Royal Show begins at the Claremont Showgrounds this Saturday and runs until the following Saturday the 8th of October.

The Perth Royal Show is Perth’s biggest community event attracting 400 000 visitors from the city and the country every year. It has a history spanning over 170 years and serves to showcase WA agriculture, small business and entertainment.

An interesting element of this year’s show is that it’ll be smoke free for the third year. Smokers will have one area within the showgrounds where they can light up while the rest of the event will be free of second hand cigarette smoke. It’s a great move forward.

Thanks to the State Government’s support of CHOGM 2011, all children aged 12 years and under will receive free entry to this year’s Perth Royal Show when accompanied by an adult.

98.5 Sonshine FM is broadcasting live from the show for the first seven days.

I’m really looking forward to presenting my Morning Café radio programme, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday to Friday next week as well as hosting this Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.

I’ll have a range of interesting guests and will probably get involved in some weird situations.

If you’re thinking of heading to the show this year, make sure you drop in to our broadcast centre and say hello. We’re be overlooking the main arena right next to the Members’ Grandstand.

Broadcasting from the show instead of our Como studios will almost double the distance I’ll have to cycle which will be great training for our cancer ride coming up in a few weeks.
