Dralion – Cirque du Soleil back in Perth

dralion.jpgPauline and I were privileged to be guests at the opening night of Cirque du Soleil’s Dralion last night. It’s difficult to judge the Cirque du Soleil shows against each other but I think that Dralion was my favourite of the three shows I’ve seen.

It’s hard to believe that the human body can bend into so many different shapes. I reckon that I could probably force my body to bend like that if I had my skeleton removed. The performers were absolutely amazing.

I must say that while it would have been great for Emily and James to come with us last night I’m kind of glad they didn’t. If they saw some of the acrobatics the performers were able to do on trampolines I’d be in a constant state of worry that they were in the back yard trying them on our trampoline.

Apart from the athleticism I don’t think I’ve laughed so much for a long time. There’s so much humour throughout the show it’s almost a comedy at times.

The action is so fast that I reckon that even if you went a couple of times you’d still miss bits and pieces. We get so spoiled in this TV age don’t we? Have you ever found yourself wanting to freeze frame a real life moment or watch something you’ve just seen again in slow motion? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our brains were all fitted with hard drive recorders? I guess they are in a way … that’s where memory comes in to play … but sometimes it’d be great to see things again. I felt a bit that way watching Dralion. There were times when it would have been good to be able to rewind and slow the action down a bit. Seeing people jumping higher than should be humanly possible and then sliding through tiny metal rings high in the air looks like a brilliant illusion but it’s all happening for real and it’d be wonderful to slow things down and see it all happen again. I guess that’s why they produce DVDs of the show.

The costumes and the set were incredible and gave the performance a wonderful sense of the surreal. It all combines to transport you to another world.

After the show we were privileged to be invited to the ‘After Party’ with the cast of the show and a selection of ‘Perthonalities’. It was a magnificent event and the perfect way to cap off an amazing evening.

If you get the chance to go and see Dralion make sure you grab it with both hands.

Riders Choice Perth Criteriums 2009

IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ON THE TOUR DE PERTH (13th to 15th NOVEMBER) YOU’LL FIND DETAILS HERE.

crit.jpgThere’ll be some excellent cycle racing around Perth from Friday the 23rd to Monday the 26th of January.

Riders Choice Perth Criteriums 2009 is on its way with some spectacular racing around various Perth street circuits. The series is being run by the team at TriEvents and promises to be a highlight of the Australia Day long weekend. I’m looking forward to once again being part of the commentary team with Gary Suckling of Riders Choice. Gary is such a professional and it’s a real honour to work alongside him.

Criterium racing is the most exciting version of road racing. Each race involves high speed and intense competition, around a tight and intimate circuit. No rider is guaranteed a win and no spectator walks away disappointed, which sets the scene for a perfect week end of racing.

Perth Criteriums does not only focus on elite male cyclists. The aim of the series is to help build the profile of up and coming junior and female cyclists. Cyclists can participate in teams, with the opportunity to also win prize money at the conclusion of each race and the series.

Perth Criteriums is made up of four events over four days. The events are afternoon / evening races in four high profile locations – Joondalup, Leederville, Victoria Park and Perth.

The first event of the series gets underway at 6:00 p.m. in Joondalup on Friday the 23rd of January.

Western Australians are great supporters of this kind of cycle racing and there’s sure to be plenty of spectators watching each event. Remembering Christmas with Colin Barnett

ColinBarnett.jpgColin Barnett is the leader of the Western Australian Liberal Party, Member for Cottesloe and Premier of Western Australia. In the past he has been head of the Western Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a lecturer in economics at Curtin University.

Since entering parliament in 1990 he has held a number of positions including Minister for Resources Development and Energy, Minister for Education and Minister for Tourism. He also served as the Leader of the House in the Legislative Assembly during the Court government.

It was my pleasure to have Colin Barnett as my guest during my Morning Programme on 98.5 Sonshine FM this morning.

We talked about Colin’s early Christmas memories and discussed his hopes for Christmas 2008.

Colin Barnett has been a great supporter of 98.5 Sonshine FM over the years so it was good to be able to show him around our new studios.

You can hear what the Premier had to say along with his Christmas message for Western Australians by clicking the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

Eric Ripper wishes WA a happy Christmas

EricRipper.jpgEric Ripper is the Leader of the Opposition in Western Australia, Australia’s biggest state. He’s the member for the local area of Belmont and has served in the WA Parliament for over twenty years.

Mr Ripper entered Cabinet as part of the Labor Government following the 2001 Western Australian election. He became Minister for Energy in 2001. He had previously served as Deputy Premier, Treasurer, Minister for Government Enterprises and Minister Assisting the Minister for Public Sector Management in Geoff Gallop’s cabinet. Before the 2008 election, he was the Deputy Premier and Treasurer, in the Carpenter government.

He was my special guest during my Morning Programme on 98.5 Sonshine FM yesterday.

While we’re very used to seeing Eric Ripper in the political spotlight I took the opportunity to find out a bit more about the man behind the politics.

We spoke about his early years growing up in Western Australia, his decision to enter public life and his hopes for Western Australians this Christmas.

You can listen to our conversation by clicking play on the audio player at the bottom of this post.
