The Withdrawal Symptoms are Gone

I finally made it out for my regular Saturday morning ride today. With a range of things coming up on Saturdays past, I haven’t joined the bunch for about a month.

It felt good to catch up with the regulars and put in a good ride. We even had a former world cycling champion and Olympian with us this morning.

Of course it’s always nice to finish off with a good coffee. The long black and chocolate chip muffin went down very well.

Perth Criterium Series

Today the Perth Criterium Cycling Series begins in Joondalup.

Today’s race is the Australian Men’s Open Criterium Championship. The next three races will be part of the Be Active Cycle Instead International Series.

I’m part of the commentary team for the first time. Should be fun.

Crash Bang Wallop

Our Saturday morning ride turned into quite an event a couple of days ago.

We were about a third of our way around the circuit we take when I heard the sickening sound of clashing metal behind me. It seemed to go on forever. It sounded as if the entire pack behind me had fallen.

We pulled over to the side of the road and then looked back. 3 cyclists had come down on a small bridge. There is a bad join between the road and bridge which one of the riders had hit quite badly.

One cyclist had just a few scrapes, one had a cut to the head, and the third had a broken collarbone. Yuck.

The group swung into action with some looking after the injured guys, some directing traffic, someone calling an ambulance, another calling his partner to come and collect the bikes of those who fell.

One the two more seriously injured guys had been packed into the back of the ambulance and Judy had turned up to take the bikes away, we rode back towards the coffee shop where we meet after each Saturday ride.

It was a rather subdued conversation, mostly focussing on the accident and previous cycling accidents.

We’ll all be back next week, hoping that we all stay a lot safer on the ride.

A Grand Reunion

We finished cycling across Australia on the 9th of October – over a month ago. Tonight we’re getting back together. Or at least a large percentage of us will be getting back together. The Western Australian contingent of our cross Australia trip is having a reunion.

So many of those who were on the trip have told me how difficult it has been to get used to ‘normal’ life since the trip ended. We were together for 32 days. We ate together – slept together (ie: we shared accommodation – not beds) – prayed together – went through tough times – went through wonderful times – shared scripture – shared our lives. Basically, we encountered ‘church’ for 32 days. We were cycling for a purpose beyond ourselvesand God was teaching us the stuff of life as we journeyed.

Of course we can’t spend our entire lives in that sort of environment – our legs would get very tired – not to mention our bottoms – but what can we take from that experience and put into our day to day routines?

I know part of the reason why people are finding it so difficult to get back to their old routines. For one, they’ve tasted true ‘fellowship of the saints’. Not that we called it that, we were just a bunch of people doing what God had asked of us – but isn’t that just the point?

I hope that we can all keep the momentum going. I hope that we don’t just assign what we experienced to a special place in history because the stuff of life was there. We need to separate the lessons from the situation in which they were taught and hang on to the lessons for dear life.

As for the reunion – I can’t wait.

On The Road Again

Two days off the bike and it was a real pleasure to get back on today for the ride to work. I could have done without the wind trying to push me back home but conditions were perfect otherwise. (Maybe the breeze will still be blowing that way when I head home.)

I must admit I’m finding it a bit hard trying to get back into ‘normal life’ (whatever that is) after returning from a ride across Australia. I cycled in a team from Perth, Western Australia, to Hobart, Tasmania. 4233.77km in 32 days. I’m glad my work isn’t strictly 9 to 5. I don’t think I could handle that right now.

The good thing about coming back home is that I’m with my family again. I missed them like you wouldn’t believe while I was away. It’s good to have somewhere to come back to.
