Beware the office loudmouth

You’re stuck there for hours every day. Sooner or later something’s bound to annoy you.

What are the things that you find most annoying at work?

This article at News.com.au tells us that the most annoying thing for most of us is the office loudmouth. Do you really need to know your co-workers most intimate secrets? By the way that some people conduct their phone calls the answer is apparently, yes. When someone at the desk next to you takes a private call and then proceeds to speak quite LOUDLY and CLEARLY it’s hard not to stay up to date with things about them that you’d perhaps rather not know.

Another office annoyance is those ridiculous ringtones. OK, it was cute the first time …. maybe even the first two or three times. Now, it’s just annoying.

What are the things that cause you to foster thoughts of violence against your fellow workers? What about leaving dirty dishes in the kitchen? How about the people that put the empty milk carton back in the fridge or use up the last of the stationery without telling anyone?

What are your main workmate annoyances?

Life's essentials

Ever noticed how quickly we start relying on things that we never needed before?

Our internet service provider at work was having a few issues today. Our connection to the outside world was out for the entire day. We had to try to find ways to work differently to get around the problem. A few years back an internet connection was a bit of a bonus in business. It was helpful but not essential. These days we’ve come to rely on that connection.

I’ve recently started wearing reading glasses and I was looking forward to getting through a few chapters of the book I’m reading at the moment when I got home last night. I was most of the way home when I realised that I’d left my glasses at work. That meant no reading at all. It’s another case of something that I really didn’t need even a year ago but is essential now.

Are there things that you can’t do without that a few years ago didn’t even exist? Have you become dependent on one form of technology or another?

I wonder what are the things haven’t been invented yet that we won’t be able to live without in ten years.

Weird & wonderful links

  • An Australian man who is alleged to have sent over two billion spam emails, mostly promoting Viagra, is being investigated. If convicted he’s in a lot of trouble. Penalties for contravention of the Spam Act include fines of up to $220,000 per day for first time corporate offenders and up to $1.1 million per day for repeat offenders. Ouch!
  • A woman in China crashed her car while trying to teach her dog to drive.
  • He’s been my favourite author for a long time and he is credited as being possibly the greatest British preacher of the 20th century. Appartently he was also a fan of watching wresting on TV.

Do you remember?

I’ve read a few blogs where people are remembering where they were when they first heard the news of 9/11.

Being in Australia, half way around the world from where it all took place, meant that those horrific events happened at night our time.

I was just heading off to bed and switched on my bedside radio. Very early reports were starting to filter through.

I jumped back out of bed and told Pauline that something serious had happened in the US. We switched on the TV and a short while later they started reporting what was going on.

There were only limited shots initially that were played over and over until they got more cameras into the area.

We stayed up most of the night watching things unfold.

What about you? How did you first hear of what happened five years ago?

Returning to the scene of the crime

I mentioned in my previous post that we were went to the Goodbye show for Australia’s most loved funny men at the Regal Theatre on Thursday night.

Last night we returned to see Lano and Woodley, but this time we didn’t go to the show, we just hung around near the theatre in the hope of meeting the guys.

Emily and James dressed up as ‘the two men’ and we all piled into the car, along with one of Emily’s school friends, for a late night trip into Subiaco. We arrived at the theatre just before ten to make sure we’d be around when Lano and Woodley finished their Saturday night show and headed out.

We were thrilled when we got the opportunity to meet Colin and Frank and they seemed pretty pleased to see Emily and James dressed up as them. Colin was impressed enough to whip out his camera phone and get a couple of pictures of the kids. There were smiles all around and as you can see, we got some fantastic pictures to remember the moment. While we didn’t spend long with them, the guys were very generous with their time and were an absolute delight. I get to meet quite a lot of high profile people in my work and you get to be able to spot the ‘phonies’ pretty quickly. These guys are the real deal. They’re not just engaging and funny on stage, they’re warm and personable off stage.

We reminded them that we had been at Thursday night’s show and that I had been ‘part of the act’.

While parts of the live show aren’t all that suitable for young children, our kids absolutely love the television series that they produced in the late 90s, The Adventures of Lano and Woodley. They recorded 13 hilarious episodes which we watched when they were screened on TV and which Emily and James have now watched over and over and over on DVD.

November the 11th this year will be a very sad day indeed. That’s the date of their final show ever which will be in their home town of Melbourne.

We can only hope that even though they’ll no longer be performing together, their careers will continue so that we won’t be robbed of their comedy skills.
