Goodbye

We had a wonderful time last night seeing Lano & Woodley as part of their Goodbye Tour at the Regal Theatre in Subiaco. The Perth season runs until Sunday the 24th of September.

Second row tickets ensured that we had a really good view of the performance and that we became part of the act.

I can’t say too much about what role we played but if you’ve seen the show I can say that I was the one who was in danger of having a body part severed by a shard of flying glass. Thankfully that never eventuated so Pauline didn’t need to assist in getting me to hospital as they suggested she might. When they asked her what her relationship was to me she was laughing so hard that all she could do was point to her wedding ring to show that she is my wife.

I was also blamed for being a dissenting voice during one sketch. You’ll know what I mean if you’ve been to a performance. All this happened as I sat quietly in my seat. The only time I spoke was when I was asked my name from the stage.

For some, this would prove the rule of never sitting in the front three rows of any comedy show. As far as I’m concerned it was a lot of fun and made the evening all the more memorable.

It’s sad that the guys won’t be working together once their current tour finishes. They’ve provided some of the best comedy in Australia for 20 years and they’ll be greatly missed.

Peter Brock dead

Just days after the death of Aussie icon Steve Irwin comes news that Australian car racing legend Peter Brock has been killed while competing in Targa West here in Western Australia. Brock was 61.

Apparently the accident occured near Gidgegannup. Brock was driving with Mick Hone in a Daytona Coupe. Hone has apparently been taken to hospital and is in a stable condition.

Some background on Brock from the Wikipedia says, “Brock rose to public attention in touring car racing, winning the Bathurst 1000, Australia’s most prominent domestic motorsport event, a total of nine times through the 1970s and ’80s. As the lead driver for the pseudo-factory Holden Dealer Team, in a succession of Holden Toranas and later Commodores the smooth-talking, clean-cut Brock became a household name well beyond motor racing fans, and was probably the best known Australian racing driver after Sir Jack Brabham.

After his ‘retirement’ he made two returns to Bathurst (2002 and 2004) and competed in the Nations Cup for highly modified and exotic cars in 2004. In 2002, he returned to top-level touring car racing as a team owner with the entry of “Team Brock” into the V8 Supercar category. However, he sold his share in the team to Kees Weel at the end of 2003.”

A clearer picture of the accident is starting to emerge. This story at NEWS.com.au fills in some of the detail.

Father's Day 2006

I notched up a decade of Father’s Days yesterday. Having two wonderful children makes Father’s Day a day worth celebrating.

The day was a busy one with the final of our 6 week Home Improvement series at church. I’ve been very much involved in the series. Each week I’ve introduced one of my 98.5 Sonshine FM morning programme guests. It’s been great. We’ve had fun and learnt a lot in the process.

After church we headed home where I prepared lunch. I then managed to grab a half hour nap. (I must be getting old.)

We headed out to catch up with Pauline’s parents to wish her dad a happy Father’s Day. Some other family joined us there and after eating too much for afternoon tea we all headed off to a local park to let the cousins play together.

There were a couple of moments at the park that stood out to me. I climbed a tree with James. Well, to be truthful, I started climbing and James thought it looked like a good idea so he joined me amongst the branches.

Soon afterwards I noticed Emily on her own. She was sitting on a bench on the other side of the park. I wandered over, sat down and put my arm around her. I asked if she was OK, if she was unhappy or just tired. She didn’t really know so we just sat for a while. We didn’t talk, we simply enjoyed each other’s company.

Emily and James gave me some lovely gifts for Father’s Day but the greatest gifts they gave me were the precious moments we shared.

Crikey – Steve Irwin is dead

Australia’s so called ‘Crocodile Hunter’ has died. 44 year old Steve Irwin, the owner and manager of the Australia Zoo in Queensland, was killed by a stingray barb while recording a documentary. Apparently the barb went through his heart.

This report from NEWS.com.au has some of the early details. Part of the report says, “He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the tragedy occured.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

Irwin’s body is being flown to Cairns.”

Apparently his wife is in Tasmania and does not yet know of his death.

While I wasn’t a fan of the Crocodile Hunter or the image of Australians that he portrayed, it must be acknowledged that he did a huge amount towards promoting Australia. He will be sadly missed by people all around the world.
