Snap!

Have you ever felt that you’re living someone else’s life? I feel a bit that way at the moment.

For the third day in a row I’ve driven to work. That’s pretty normal for a lot of people but it just feels wrong. I usually ride to and from work each day and when I don’t ride I really miss it. I miss the rush of the ride. I miss the kick start it gives my morning and the opportunity to wind down before I walk through the door at home at the end of the day. I don’t think I could ever handle the stop start nature of driving in traffic every morning and every afternoon.

Why am I driving? After a wonderful weekend of cycling where I clocked up some great kilometres, I cycled to work as normal on Monday morning. It was a wet ride but that’s the price you pay for choosing a mode of transport that makes you feel alive. When I got on my bike at the end of the day …. snap. The rear derailleur hanger snapped in two. Not good.

Since Monday afternoon my bike has been at Avanti Plus Cannington. I’m confident in the team there and I’m sure that they’ll do a great job with my bike. They’ve always looked after me well in the past but it’s still an inconvenience and an expense that I could have done without. I want my bike back.

As you probably know, I’m training for my annual Cancer Ride, raising money for Cancer Council WA, so I don’t need my riding to come to a screaming halt for any length of time.

The Avanti Plus Cannington guys are waiting on a part and I’ll hopefully be back on the bike within the next couple of days. My experience with their mechanical work suggests that my machine will ride smoother than it did before the break and I’m really looking forward to getting back on two wheels.

My not so new bike

New Cadent Bike
Click for a closer look
I finally picked up my ‘renewed’ bike on Friday afternoon.

It looks completely different to the bike that I’ve had since 2008 but a lot of the components are the same. Same wheels, seat, gears, brakes and most other bits and pieces. The new bits are the frame and a new front derailleur. I’ve also put brand new tyres on the bike.

The story is that my previous frame developed a crack in the rear dropout, derailleur side.

Avanti bikes carry a lifetime frame warranty so I took the bike to Avanti Plus Cannington and they replaced the frame with the current model Cadent frame. There was no argument or discussion. They saw the broken frame and immediately got to work organising the replacement. They were great people and the mechanic did a wonderful job of putting the bike together.

It’s very much a step up from my previous frame and rides so very well.

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been riding my much heavier, slower mountain bike. It feels great to be back on a road machine.

The perfect fit

cadent_1_small.jpgI’m very pleased to say that I now fit my bike perfectly.

After all the years I’ve been cycling I finally got around to getting a professional fitting. I’ve cycled thousands of kilometres and always just set up things like seat height based on what I’d read and how it felt.

I figured that I’d let the professionals help me get the right fit for my new Avanti road bike.

I dropped into Ward Cycles yesterday afternoon, put my bike on a trainer and pedaled away.

Petar from Wards videoed, entered data, checked angles, made adjustments and as it turns out not a lot had to be changed but even with the couple of changes he made I’m now feeling more comfortable on the bike.

I was almost hoping that there would be a few extra changes and that suddenly I’d be able to ride twice as fast. Unfortunately that didn’t happen. Though I must admit that it’s good to know that everything’s now as it should be.

I suppose that I now need to face the fact that the improvements from here on in are down to me

Oh Yeah!

cadent_1.jpgThere comes a point when it’s no longer helpful to throw good money into maintaining an old bike. You end up spending a lot of money and still having an old bike.

I guess I got to that point earlier this afternoon when I made the decision to buy the Avanti Cadent 1.0 from Ward Cycles in Morley.

They let me test ride it yesterday on the way home and back into work this morning. I realised then that there was no way they were getting their bike back.

For the technically minded, it’s a carbon fibre road bike with Shimano Tiagra componentry all the way through apart from a 105 rear derailleur. It’s not the best bike in the range but it rides like nothing I’ve ever experienced before.

With 98.5 Sonshine FM moving across the other side of the city in the coming weeks I’ll be riding a lot further each day and I’ll need a dependable bike for the journey. This bike won’t just be dependable, it’ll be an absolute pleasure to ride.

Fuel prices continue to rise and so this purchase will pay itself off in fuel and maintenance savings fairly quickly. On top of that, the weather is getting better every day so I intend putting a lot of kilometres on the new bike over the coming months.

If you live in the Perth area and are looking for a bike shop you can trust, check out Ward Cycles and mention my name.
