You haven’t aged a bit

time.jpgTime may move on relentlessy but I noticed something interesting this morning. My mind refuses to keep up with the times and it’s not necessarily a bad thing.

A friend of mine posted a couple of recent photos on Facebook. I haven’t caught up with him for many years but when I looked at his photos they looked just like him, and to be more specific, they looked just like him from around twenty five years ago when I first got to know him.

I can see that he’s aged but I still see the guy I knew all those years ago. I don’t think of him as a guy in his twenties but that’s what I’m seeing.

It seems to be the case with anyone I meet that I’ve known a long time. I always see them physically as the person I first got to know rather than the person they are now.

I see middle aged people that to my eyes look like twenty year olds. If I met them for the first time today I’m sure I’d see them very differently.

Do you find the same thing? Sure, you can tell that someone’s got a bit older. Less hair and what’s there is looking decidedly gray but they still look like the person you’ve always known?

My only hope is that people I’ve known for decades see me that way too.

Getting Older

eye_glasses.jpgThere are several ways you can tell that you’re getting old. One of the things for me was having to start wearing reading glasses a couple of years ago … well I think it was a couple of years back … it’s hard to remember such things when you’re getting older.

I know that whether or not you wear glasses isn’t always down to aging, many young people need glasses for various reasons, but the optometrist I dealt with told me in my case it was all down to aging eyes not being able to focus like they used to. Sadly I now think I need stronger glasses.

Still … that doesn’t mean that I’m getting older … but maybe … just maybe … the fact that I left the radio studio a few minutes ago to get my glasses … went to my desk … and came back without them could be a clue. The fact that I almost did it twice may well be confirmation.

Counting the Years

Aili from Not Perfection wrote a post a couple of days ago titled The Cycle.

Her post consisted of just one line.

I’ve noticed recently that my parents’ hands are starting to look like the hands of my grandparents.

The post got me thinking. I commented in reply.

I’ve noticed recently that my hands are looking like my parents’ hands once did.

Have you noticed the signs of aging in yourself? Are there tell tale signs that you’re not quite as young as you used to be? Do you see your parents staring back at you from the mirror?

While there are some days that I feel my age more than others, I find it difficult at times to think of myself as any older than I’ve been for the last twenty years. Then I look at the mirror a little longer and see a middle aged man standing where a young man once did. There are deep lines where there used to be smooth skin. My scalp isn’t quite as populated as it once was and there are a few more signs of grey starting to creep into the picture.

I’m not overly concerned by the changes. Sure, if I had the choice I’d choose young over old, but I’d certainly like to keep the wisdom that the years have helped to develop. I’m generally comfortable in my skin, even if it is in a constant state of change.

How do you feel about the years continuing to accumulate? Do you sometimes wish you could put the brakes on or even go back a few years? Does getting older worry you or are you embracing the person you’re becoming?
