Evil in the Church

bad_apple.jpgThere are bad apples in any kind of work or social organisation and most of the time we understand that while those bad apples can tend to cast a shadow over others, they are not indicative of the wider group.

Paedophiles, bullies, thieves, fraudsters and others like them can be found at all levels of society but should we be able to expect a higher standard of conduct from those within the church? Many of us know that people of faith often struggle with the same issues that those outside the church are facing but surely of God is real, faith in him should make a difference.

Many people claim that they can’t accept God or faith because they see so much evil within churches. Does their claim hold water?

My regular Wednesday morning guest on 98.5 Sonshine FM is Ross Clifford who is the Principal of Morling College in New South Wales and current President of the Baptist Union of Australia. Each week we chat about a range of issues relating to spirituality and belief.

Last week we looked at the problem of evil within the church and whether people are right to avoid a church that seems to preach one thing then do another.

We looked at the record of the Christian church and found that overall the story is certainly not all about people failing to live up to their beliefs but one of many great triumphs. However, the point remains that there are people who have done some terrible things in the name of God or while claiming to follow him. What can we do about it?

They're locking me up!

convict.jpgThis Friday morning, the 7th of March, I will be broadcasting my 98.5 Sonshine FM radio programme from Kings Square, Fremantle, next to the Town Hall, where I’ll be a convict for a cause. I’ll be asking people to donate towards Cystic Fibrosis WA so that I can be released. I need your help to pull off my very own prison break.

I’ll be joined by fellow announcer Tim Long. Together we’ll broadcast in Fremantle from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. If you’re local I hope you’ll dro in and say hello. I’m told that I will be allowed visitors and you won’t need to be searched. (Bring a cake with a file in it.)

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common life threatening, recessive genetic condition affecting Australian children and is the second most common life-shortening, childhood onset inherited disorder in the United States. For such a serious condition it really doesn’t get a lot of attention.

What can you do to support families who are battling CF?

Firstly, you can help me to get the word out. If you publish a blog please link to this post. Can I ask you to email people that you know to highlight what I’ll be doing? Please help me get the word out to as many people as possible. If you use social bookmarking such as StumbleUpon or Digg you can use the buttons at the bottom of this post to share this post with a wider audience.

The other way you can help is by donating. Simply click here, click the ‘Sponsor Me’ button then fill in the relevant details.

Donations can be accepted on Visa or MasterCard. Please keep in mind that the amounts are in Australian Dollars and of course the tax deductibility is only available in Australia. If you’re not in Australia and you’d like to work out the exchange rate you can work it out through this currency converter.

Thank you for your help with this. Together we can make a very big difference for families who can really do with our support and encouragement.

Let’s Get Organised

calendar.jpgHow do you keep track of the days and weeks that seem to fly past at warp speed?

Almost two months have already rushed past in 2008. Our brand new year is now well and truly underway and we’re left wondering where all the time has gone.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could stop the world for a week or two so we could catch up? Unfortunately we don’t have that luxury so we need to find workable ways to make our time work for us rather than it being a threat.

Do you have any tricks or tips that help you establish routine for yourself or your household?

Life Skills Trainer, Jill Bonanno, joined me on Friday on 98.5 Sonshine FM for our weekly radio segment, Simply Living. We looked at finding a workable routine for our lives.

For some people it’s a whiteboard, others a diary, some use a computer programme or a portable device of some kind while others plot our their days on a fridge. Whichever way we do it, having some kind of routine ensures that we don’t come to the end of yet another year wondering what happened. Taking control of our lives, while still allowing for spontaneity, helps us to live life to the full with much less stress.

How do you stay organised? How far do you plan ahead? What do you find are the advantages of planning ahead and sticking with some kind of routine?

We discussed routines for ourselves and our families and how a few simple ideas can make life a lot more livable. I’d love your input. Please listen to our discussion by clicking the play button on the audio player in this post before leaving your own ideas in the comments section.

Pet Names

dog.jpgOnce a month Dog Behaviour Consultant and Trainer, Kathy Kopellis McLeod, joins me during my morning radio programme on 98.5 Sonshine FM to talk about dog behaviour and answer questions from listeners.

We had a great time today. We took a slight detour from our regular chats and talked about the extra names we give our dogs. We weren’t talking about their real names, we were talking about the nicknames that our dogs seem to gather.

After a while, we widened the scope and started throwing in a few cat nicknames.

Dylan rang up to tell us that his dog, Nev, gets called everything from Bubby to Poop and lots more in between.

We had several other people call in and talk to us about the names their four-legged friends have acquired. The segment was a lot of fun with some very amusing ‘pet names’ for dogs and cats of all shapes and sizes.

I even told a few stories about how I’d named a couple of my pets. One was named after a fictional character created by comedian Grahame Bond, and another was named after one of the guys from the band GangGajang. Have a listen to the audio to hear the details.

What are some of the pet names that you’ve used for your pets? Are there any that you find too embarrassing to use when others are around? How did you come up with your pet’s real names and nicknames?

If you want to have a few laughs, just click the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

Eduardo Verástegui and Bella

Eduardo.jpgEvery now and then I get to conduct a radio interview that I wish the whole world could hear. It’s not that I think I’m a great interviewer it’s more about giving the world the opportunity to hear from someone who is passionate about their mission in life.

This morning I had one of those interviews on 98.5 Sonshine FM.

I hope you’ll take the time to click on the audio player at the bottom of this post and listen. I’m sure you’ll be impressed with my guest.

From studying law to becoming a model, a singer and an actor, Mexican born Eduardo Verástegui has had a very interesting life.

Movie goers in Australia will soon see Eduardo playing the role of Jose in the award winning movie Bella.

Bella has won numerous awards and honours including the prestigious People’s Choice Awards at the Toronto Film Festival.

I’ve seen a preview DVD of the movie and it is absolutely beautiful. If you get the chance to see this movie … do it.

Bella.jpgEduardo joined me on the phone today to talk about Bella but there was much more to the conversation. He spoke of having integrity and refusing to compromise. It’s something he knows a lot about. He didn’t work for around four years becuase he refused to take acting roles that would stereotype Latinos.

It truly was a pleasure to be able to talk to Eduardo and to hear his passion for the projects he undertakes.
