Surprise Me

If you were a fit, young, 23 year old, knife wielding burglar, you’d consider yourself fairly safe breaking into the home of a 71 year old.

News.com.au has published an article titled, Boxing grandpa knocks thief out cold. It gives details of the thief who broke into the house of a retired Army boxer.

Gregory McCalium, 23, fronted court yesterday with a black eye and a fat lip after he was busted – and subsequently bashed – by 71-year-old Frank Corti in Mr Corti’s house in Oxford, UK.

Mr Corti was famous for his right hook when he was a featherweight in the Royal Engineers.

The thief certainly wasn’t expecting to come off second best.

71 year old Frank Corti defied expectations. He surprised the thief and everyone who has heard the story since.

In what way do you defy expectations? Is there something about you that most people don’t know? Something that you hide away, which would surprise even those who know you?

You might not be able to throw a right hook like Frank but is there something surprising about you that you can share? How about leaving a comment in the comments section of this post. Go on …. surprise me.

Waking up startled

digital_clock.jpgI had a slightly less frightening start to the day this morning.

Quite some years ago Pauline bought me a very nice bedside clock radio. It’s served me well ever since.

It has a button that I can press to change the clock to daylight saving time without all the hassle of changing the time manually. I press the button at the start of daylight saving each year then press it again once it’s all over. So simple.

In all the years I’ve had the clock I’ve never accidently hit that button … but that all came undone yesterday when I must have pushed it while fumbling to turn off the alarm.

By the time I finally opened my eyes and squinted towards the display I noticed that I was running an hour late.

I jumped out of bed wondering why it still looked so dark. I then looked at another clock and realised my mistake.

It was good to know that I was still on time but it took a while to get over that startled feeling and being woken up with such a shock.
