Weighing up Christmas

A couple of days ago I asked the question, if I were to put a gift under your Christmas tree would you leave it there until the 25th?

I created a poll in my sidebar so you can vote on your whether you prefer to be surprised when you open a gift or if you’re the kind of person who tries to find out what’s beneath the wrapping ahead of time. I’m still taking votes so you can add your choice by going to my sidebar now.

When I saw the latest cartoon from Being Five I thought I’ve just got to share it with you. It fits the discussion perfectly. I love all the Being Five cartoons and I reccomend that if you’re not already a regular reader, you bookmark the site now. George very kindly gave me permission to add the cartoon to this post. Thanks George.

Is it morning already?

We had a bit of a late one last night …. but it was well and truly worth it.

We went to Fremantle to see one of the final concerts for the Sensitive New Age Cowpersons. Their final Western Australian show will be this Saturday afternoon.

If you haven’t heard of themn before, they’re a group of four guys who play everything ‘bluegrass style’, including songs by Abba, U2, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones and even AC/DC as well as a few originals.

They always provide a very funny show and towards the end of the night I heard someone behind me telling their friend that their face was aching from laughing.

As well as the humour they’re incredibly good musicians. All four of them play so well but seeing ‘Doc Adams’ play the mandolin, and watching ‘Kid Simpson’ play better banjo than anyone else in the country, were real highlights. How those guys can move their fingers that fast and hit all the right notes astounds me every time.

Among those in the crowd checking out the SNACS one last time was well respected singer/songwriter John Butler.

James usually falls asleep once it gets to his bedtime but Pauline got him to prepare by having an afternoon sleep. He made it through the entire show which is not a bad effort considering it finished around 11 o’clock. After dropping Pauline’s mum home and heading across the city back home it was rather late when our heads touched our pillows.

Sad to think that after 14 years the guys are about to break up. I’m just glad we’ve been able to enjoy their show a few times over the years.

You can listen to my recent interview with Ian ‘the kid’ Simpson using the media player below.

Do you live in a 'Christian Nation'?

Jim Wallis, author of God’s Politics – Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn’t Get It, has written an interesting article on his blog. It’s his latest contribution to the The Washington Post/Newsweek online discussion On Faith.

While many would claim that America is a ‘Christian Nation’, Rev. Wallis says that it’s not only not the case, he hopes it will never be so. He claims that many fundamentalist Christians have tried to re-write US history.

Some still say that Australia is a ‘Christian Nation’ too. That’s certainly not the case and we’re kidding ourselves if we believe that it is.

Jim Wallis makes comment regarding the Christian backlash against retailers who have ‘taken Christ out of Christmas’. The actions of retailers in wishing customers a Happy Holiday instead of using the word Christmas has been dubbed the “war against Christmas” by some Christians.

Wallis won’t be losing any sleep if a shop assistant wishes him a ‘Happy Holiday’. He says in the article, “Does Jesus’ message really depend on our being reminded to have a ‘Merry Christmas’ just before we plunge into shopping malls and engage in orgies of holiday consumerism that run so directly contrary to his message? Are Wal-Mart and Target to be seen as critical places of theological and spiritual reflection?”

Great point isn’t it? Do we really want to connect the madness that we experience each year at this time with Christ? Does saying ‘Merry Christmas’ really redeem what the season has become?

He touches on the belief, held by some Christians, that the government should be used to enforce the church’s language and theology. While I think that Christians should be involved in shaping politics I do battle with how far that influence should reach.

I certainly believe that people of faith should be influencing policy to ensure justice for all but I don’t think that we should be legislating ‘Christian belief and morality’. The Bible says, “The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” That’s why it always amazes me that so many Christians want to change the outward appearance and actions of others rather than seeking to touch hearts. Why should we expect anyone to adopt our ‘moral code’ unless we first demonstrate Christ’s unconditional love?

Shake, rattle and squeeze

If I were to put a gift under your Christmas tree would you leave it there until the 25th?

Would you feel the wrapping hoping to work out what’s inside? Would you carefully peel away the sticky tape to take a peek under the wrapping?

I’m the kind of person who prefers the surprise of opening gifts on special occasions. I have no idea where Pauline hides my gifts in the lead up to birthdays and other special days and even if I did I wouldn’t go looking. Opening a gift when you know what’s inside is a real anti-climax for me.

What about you? Do you have to know or are you OK to wait? I’ve put a new poll in my sidebar so you can vote on your preference. Will you please take the time to vote now?

Last week’s poll was about dreaming. 83% of those who responded said that they dream in colour. 3% said that they dream in both colour and black and white. 14% said they weren’t sure.

On the road

We travelled the Road to Bethlehem last night.

The Road to Bethlehem is a remarkable portrayal of the Christmas story in the form of a free, interactive, dramatised experience featuring over 100 actors and singers. We’ve been to visit the production each December for the past few years.

The idea is that you’re taken back in time to witness the events of the first Christmas as they unfold, providing a unique entertainment experience that the whole family enjoys.

Instead of sitting down and watching a show, you walk from scene to scene as you travel to your destination, the stable. Live animals, great humour and some wonderful angelic choirs add to the experience. The photo is from the scene in Herod’s palace showing Herod talking to the wise men.

Before and after you’ve trod the Road to Bethlehem you can spend time in the ancient marketplace. You can trade your Australian dollars for ‘Denari’. The kids also got the chance to experience a short camel ride.

Road to Bethlehem is hosted each year by the Livingston SDA Community Church in Canning Vale. It runs for three nights and tonight is the final night for this year. It starts at 7 o’clock tonight and there’s free parking across the road at Livingston Marketplace Shopping Centre.
