Waterwise Gardening

The temperature went above 40 degrees on Saturday here in Perth. That’s 40 degrees Celcius which is around 104 degrees Fahrenheit. We headed to the movies so we could sit in a cool dark room for a couple of hours.

That wasn’t quite as hot as the previous weekend when we had 3 days in a row, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, all reaching at least 41. (106 F)

With our harsh summers, booming population and limited water availability, we’re having to be a bit smarter about the gardens we create. With that in mind, local gardening expert, John Colwill, has teamed up with our Water Corporation to create an online Waterwise Guide to Gardens.

I spoke to John this morning during my radio programme on 98.5 Sonshine FM. Thanks to our new Audio On Demand service you can listen to our discussion on waterwise gardens by clicking here.

Looking past rejection

Phil Cooke has recently published a great post about Rebecca Webb Carranza.

She was a factory worker who saw potential in what others rejected. Her vision helped her create a whole new niche in the food industry which in turn led her to running the company where she worked.

I wonder what potential remains undiscovered in the things around us or more importantly in the people around us. What potential remains undiscovered in us? I wonder if there’s something in us that we still haven’t noticed – something that will stay hidden until someone with vision and insight happens to notice something that we haven’t.

I remember a boss I had many years ago who gave me a number of tasks that were well beyond my capabilities – or so I thought. The confidence that she showed in me and her belief that I could rise to the task, without much supervision, made me think that I might just be able to achieve something. I took the tasks on and was surprised to find some untapped potential.

Has anyone ever given you a job that was too big? Have you ever seen the potential in someone else?

Simply thankful

If you could choose to live anywhere in the world where would you choose? Would you stay where you are or head half way around the world to where you believe the grass is greener?

This time last week we were celebrating Australia Day and I’ve got to say that I wouldn’t want to be living anywhere else but here in Perth, Western Australia. There are lots of places both within and outside Australia that are wonderful to visit but I can’t imagine any of them beating the lifestyle of Perth.

Life Skills Trainer, Jill Bonanno, joined me this morning on 98.5 Sonshine FM for our regular Friday morning radio segment, Simply Living. We talked about what it means to be an Australian and what we can be thankful for about living down under.

We had a few people call and email to tell us about their Australia Day celebrations and why they’re proud Aussies. You can hear today’s programme by clicking here. There is a whole range of audio options available now with 98.5 Sonshine FM’s Audio On Demand service. You can subscribe to a number of my regular radio features, including Simply Living, or just look through the archives to find something that interests you.

What about you? If you’re Australian, tell us what makes you proud about our wide, brown land.

Wherever you live, whatever country you call home, are you living where you want to live? Are
you proud of your heritage? Are you thankful that you live where you do? Does your heart stir when you see your flag raised? I’d love your input. Feel free to comment by clicking on the comment link below.

A Million Penguins

Want to write a novel but need a little help?

How about having millions of people from all over the world throwing in their opinions?

Now that we’ve all got used to Wikipedia and the idea of everyone having a go at editing an encyclopedia, you can now help write a wikinovel.

A Million Penguins takes the wiki idea a step or two further asking people around the world to take part in an exersize that seems to be as much a social experiment as a writing project. The website says, “A Million Penguins is an experiment in creative writing and community. Anyone can join in. Anyone can write. Anyone can edit. Let’s see if the crowds are not only wise, but creative. Or will too many cooks spoil the broth?”

So, will you be leaping in to add your writing skills to the mix?
