Don't buy this book

I enjoy reading Seth Godin’s blog but I don’t think you should buy this book.

To tell the truth, bestselling author and entrepreneur, Seth Godin, doesn’t think you should buy this book.

The reason he doesn’t think you should buy the book is because you can already get it for free by clicking here and downloading it.

Seth didn’t authorize the book to be published and he has no idea who the publisher is. He wrote the book back in 2005 and intended it to be a freebie all along. You can get Seth’s view of the whole saga here.

Due to the nature of the creative commons license Seth chose for the copyright, whoever has published the book may well be within their rights but you and I know that what they’ve done isn’t right. It’s being passed off as a new book, which it isn’t and the whole exercise is simply misleading.

If you want to read more from a very talented writer, save your money, download the free version and then spend some time looking through the archives at his blog. You’ll even find links there to some of his top selling books which he did authorise for sale.

White and Nerdy

I’ve been a fan of Weird Al for a long time and so I was thrilled when Ron at A Journey to my Father’s House pointed me in the direction of a clip from Al that features Donny Osmond helping out with some dance moves.

Click on the video to watch the clip.

If you want to see Al and Donny shooting their bits against a green screen you can click here. Lots of extra dance moves from Donny Osmond in that one.

Well that's just weird

Chris from Life Cycle tagged me a few days back. It’s now my task to list six weird things about myself.

1. I didn’t ride a bike when I was a kid. I only learned to ride when I was 16.

2. My music collection contains everything from Bing Crosby to Killing Heidi.

3. My mind regularly re-writes the lyrics of many of the songs I hear in a sort of ‘Weird Al’ kind of way. I don’t do it on purpose, it just happens. I know what the real lyrics are but my substituted lyrics are generally far more entertaining.

4. I often wander around with bare feet at work.

5. While I’m scared of heights I just love flying.

6. I feel more comfortable standing up on stage to speak to 10 000 people than I do walking into a room of 10 people.

What are some weird things about you? Either post some details on your own blog or have your say in the comments section of this post.

Some random disconnected thoughts

A week or so ago I overheard a fragment of a conversation while in a department store. A young lady was telling an older lady that she had never been all that close to her mother. I would guess that the young lady was around 9 years of age. I found that incredibly sad.

While driving my family today, a small truck pulled out of a shopping centre and cut in front of us. It came dangerously close to our car. As it passed I noticed a sticker on the back of the vehicle stating that ‘Only Idiots Cut in Front of Trucks’.

Beware of supermarkets on a Saturday afternoon. We needed to pick up a few bits and pieces so we dropped in to shop. I was pushing our trolley (shopping cart) slowly through the busy crowd of shoppers until we turned the corner into the last aisle of the supermarket and stopped. The cheese section was totally gridlocked.

If you tread on a prickle of any sort and part of it lodges inside your foot, try to have the offending item removed as soon as possible. If you leave it for a few days it can be very painful when your wife takes to your foot with a pair of tweezers and tries to remove it.

Ring Ring

Did you know that it was 131 years ago today that Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone?

He would have never dreamt that all these years later people would take telephones with them wherever they went. Walk down almost any street and you’re sure to see at least one or two people talking away on their mobile phones.

Today’s phones can be very convenient but if we don’t manage their use properly they can end up managing us. People run up huge bills that they can’t afford and many feel uncomfortable if they don’t have their phones within reach 24 hours a day.

We are now more contactable than ever before and this fact gives other people license to decide what we do with our time. By having a phone with us at all times and accepting whatever calls come in we’re handing the responsibility of our time management over to other people, often times people we don’t even know. They’re free to talk to us at any time, night or day, rather than us deciding when we should meet or talk.

Do you have a mobile or cell phone? Do you know how to turn the phone off? Do you decide when to take calls and who you’ll take them from or are you letting other people set the agenda for your life?

I’ve got to admit that I love having a mobile phone. Even when I was in the middle of India, thousands of kilometres away from home, or cycling across Australia, Pauline and the kids were only ever a phone call away. I love the comfort of knowing that I can very quickly get help in case of emergency or even just call home to say that I’m running late.

I don’t use my phone very much at all but I do use the phone rather than letting it use me. I’m happy to switch it off and be out of contact or reject calls if they come at a time when they’re not convenient.

What about you? Have you managed to tame your phone? What kind of phone use annoys you in other people?
