Dear Winter

Dear Winter

I’m so sorry that I left you. Summer seemed so enticing and warm, hot even, but I was wrong to leave you. I know that now.

Sure, you were cold at times but at least you didn’t flare up all the time like Summer does. Spending time with Summer leaves me feeling drained and tired. Back when we were still together, Summer made promises, but the reality is so different to what I imagined.

I fell for the oldest trick in the book. When I was with you the grass seemed greener elsewhere, but with Summer, there is no green grass. Nothing’s green. It’s all brown and crunchy.

I’m not saying that there haven’t been great times with Summer. Some evenings have been amazing but Summer’s gentle warmth gives way to an incredible harshness when the next day arrives. I expected endless excitement but I’ve got to admit, I’ve been burnt. I can’t sleep. I just lay awake thinking about you.

Winter, I know it’ll still be some time until you feel ready to take me back but right now I’m yearning for you. In the mean time you may hear stories that I’m still with Summer. Let me assure you that’s not my fault. I want Summer to go but you have no idea how clingy Summer can be.

Before I return to you it’s likely you’ll hear rumours that I’m with Autumn but believe me, I’m coming back to you.

Yours truly

Rodney

Why wasn’t science like this in school?

Today for your viewing pleasure, a science lesson.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you put liquid nitrogen in a bottle, put the bottle in a bin of warm water, and then threw in 1500 ping pong balls? No? Neither had I but I’m glad that someone wondered about it enough to find out.

This is a great video. There’s a fairly long lead up to the final result but it’s worth it to know what’s going on. If you’re impatient and just want the action shot, go 3:50 into the video.

Dumb Ways to Die

Melbourne’s Metro Trains has launched a viral advertising campaign aimed at reducing the number of train related deaths in the state of Victoria. Rather than the regular, scary, stay-off-the-tracks-it’s-dangerous type approach, they’ve commissioned a catchy little video that is sure to be watched around the world hundreds of thousands of times. (Watch the video below.)

A three-minute animated music video, written by McCann ECD John Mescall, is the centre piece of the campaign. The video highlights the many dumb ways there are to die, with being hit by a train – a very preventable death – among them.

Mescall said: “We’ve got people eating superglue, sticking forks in toasters and selling both their kidneys. But truth is indeed stranger than fiction, and we still couldn’t come up with dumber ways to die than driving around boomgates and all the other things people do to put themselves in harm’s way around trains. The aim of this campaign is to engage an audience that really doesn’t want to hear any kind of safety message – and we think dumb ways to die will.” – Mumbrella

What do you think? Brilliant? Tacky? Insensitive? Funny?

Do you think it’ll actually work to reduce deaths?

Free Coffee and Delicious Food

coffee.jpgThey say there’s no such thing as a free lunch but there is a free morning tea.

My apologies if you don’t live close enough to Perth to take advantage of this but my Morning Café radio program on 98five Sonshine FM will be even tastier during our annual Radiothon next week.

I’m inviting people to join me and my Morning Cafe guests for morning tea from Monday the 28th of October to Friday the 2nd of November.

The morning teas will run from 10:00 a.m. to around 11:30 a.m. and should be a lot of fun. It’d be great to catch up and it’s a wonderful opportunity for me to show off my workplace in Como.

We’ve done a similar thing over the last few years and had such a wonderful time. The food from Miss Maud is always outstanding and the coffee is spectacular. On top of that it’s a lot of fun meeting a variety of listeners and letting people see how radio works.

If you’d like to be part of the fun simply click here to email me at my work email address and tell me which day you can join me. If you’re one of the first 20 replies for each day you’ll enjoy a delicious, free morning tea at the Como studios of 98.5 Sonshine FM.

Why not get a group together and email me the details. I’d love to say hello.
