Don't make me come in there!

Do you have kids who are constantly trying to get each other to react? Do you wish they’d just get along and stop fighting?

That’s the topic we tackled during my morning programme on 98.5 Sonshine FM today. Joan Grosser, from Growing Families Australia, talked about some of the things we can do to help kids start treating each other a little better.

One of the big things is to model and then teach effective conflict resolution. If we can equip our children to sort out their own wars we won’t only have a quieter home, we’ll set them up well for their adult life.

Eurobeat

I had a wonderful time on Thursday chatting to Julia Zemiro. We recorded an interview which I’ll be putting to air tomorrow morning during my radio programme on 98.5 Sonshine FM.

You can listen to the interview by clicking play on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

Many people will know Julia Zemiro from the SBS show, Rockwiz. She was also a regular on the comedy Totally Full Frontal and she was the winner of Channel 10‘s show Australia’s Brainiest TV Star in February this year.

Julia is in Perth for Eurobeat, a very funny musical stage show which parodies the Eurovision Song Contest.

During the show competitors from 12 countries compete for the big prize. Audience members are assigned to one of the 12 countries and are given the honour of voting for their favourite performers. In the spirit of Eurovision you can’t vote for your own country.

After the interval there’s the half time Bosnian spectacular, featuring Julia as her character, Bronya, singing “I’m Sarajevo, taste me”. Then, once all the votes are counted, they are added to the tally country by country.

Pauline and I went to the show on Thursday night and really enjoyed it. It’s well put together and very funny. The performers are brilliant. There is a cast of around 20 so most performers are involved in more than one act making for some very quick changes throughout the night. I would, however, point out that there is some material in the show that some may find a bit coarse.

After the show we briefly caught up with Julia. One of the other cast members took the photo of Pauline and me with Julia.

I talked to Julia about much more than her current project and our interview is certainly one of my all time favourites. I hope you enjoy it and I look forward to your comments.

A different look at sport

My regular Friday morning discussion about sport was a little different today. I usually chat to sports journalist, Mic Cullen, about a range of sporting issues. We discuss what’s happened over the past week and what we can look forward to in the coming week.

Today’s different approach was due mainly to the fact that Mic is a very talented guy who is much in demand. As well as being a sports journalist, Mic is a part time announcer with 98.5 Sonshine FM. He has also recently taken up the position of Media Manager with local basketball team, the Perth Wildcats.

His new role with the Wildcats has taken him to Taiwan for a regional basketball competition. So, instead of our usual face to face discussion, Mic called in from Taipei, Taiwan’s capital.

It’s hard to be up to date with lots of Australian sport when you’re that far away so this morning we discussed basketball and Australian rules football or AFL. We mostly looked at how well both Western Australian AFL teams have been playing recently.

You can listen to our conversation by clicking the play button in the top left hand corner of this post.

Simply Living

I mentioned a couple of posts back that we’re looking at podcasting a lot of our radio content from 98.5 Sonshine FM. Drew from Evoca left a comment to say that he wanted to get involved and so our I.T. expert will be trying to work out how that will work. Once that’s all up and running you’ll be able to subscribe to podcasts and listen to them however you like.

In the mean time, we now have a simple recording system in the studio to grab bits of our programming. I used it this morning to record my segment with Life Skills Trainer, Jill Bonanno. I then used my free Evoca account to upload the segment for you to hear.

Click on the play button on the player in the top left corner of this post and have a listen. We were talking about remembering the old days when we enjoyed the simpler things of life. About half way through we got some listeners calling in with their memories. Great stuff.

What are the simple things you remember from years ago? What are the treasured times for you? Have a listen to the programme and then leave a few comments in the comments section of this post.

Kenny

I mentioned last week that we had seen a preview of the new Australian movie Kenny. It’s a mocumentary. It takes the form of a documentary but the characters are all ficticious.

Kenny is played by comedian and co-writer Shane Jacobson. His fellow writer is his brother and director of the movie, Clayton Jacobson.

The movie follows the life of Kenny Smyth who works for a portable toilet company. It’s Kenny’s job to install portable toilets at a range of festivals and events.

I need to say before I go any further that this movie is not for everyone. If you have problems with strong language it’s probably best to give this one a miss. The strong language isn’t in every scene but there is enough scattered throughout the movie to concern some people. As you can imagine there are also quite a few toilet jokes but the movie goes way beyond that.

The ABC programme At The Movies reviewed Kenny last night and I think the difference in opinion between Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton demonstrates how movie goers will see this movie. Margaret couldn’t praise the film highly enough while David didn’t like it at all. Margaret doesn’t give four and a half out of five stars very often. David could manage just two and a half. Click here to read the review. You can also follow the link from the review to see a short interview with Kenny. What he says to Margaret in those couple of minutes really sums up the character and the movie. He talks about life being about the small victories and how different real life is to what we normally see in the movies.

This movie has pathos by the bucketload. You’ll find yourself growing to really like this down to earth toilet plumber and I think you’ll respect the priorities in his life. That’s not to say that he’s not flawed but I suppose that’s what makes him so likable. He’s an unremarkable man doing an unremarkable job but through it all you get the idea that he’s a decent bloke doing the best he can with the hand that life has dealt him.

The movie explores Kenny’s relationship with his son, his ex-wife, his elderly father, his brother and co-workers. He really is a good bloke.

If you want to see a movie that will have you exiting the cinema with a smile but that also makes you think, this is definitely worth a look. It opens around Australia next week.
