Chatting with Lucy Durack

Born in Perth, Lucy Durack graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Theatre, but even before graduating she was cast in the Brisbane and Sydney seasons of Mamma Mia!.

She has played roles in 42nd Street, the Australian premiere of Thoroughly Modern Millie, Kiss Me, Kate, Oklahoma! and many others but she’s possibly best known for playing the role of Glinda in the Australian production of Wicked.

In March it was announced that Lucy will play the main character, Elle Woods in the Australian production of Legally Blonde.

This Sunday she joins over 200 of Western Australia’s most talented young performers in two shows at the Perth Concert Hall titled Musicals in Concert with Lucy Durack and Friends. Lucy joined me in the studio this morning on 98five Sonshine FM‘s Morning Cafe.

Home grown stage sensation Lucy Durack joins over 200 of Western Australia’s most talented young performers in two shows at the Perth Concert Hall on June 10.

Musicals in Concert with Lucy Durack and Friends is presented by The Australian Performing Arts Network (APAN).

Under the acclaimed musical direction of Greg Schultz and with guest choreography by Chris Horsey, Musicals in Concert presents a line-up of smash hits from legendary musicals such as Wicked, Carousel, Hairspray and Rent.

Instrumental backing is provided by Greg Schultz’s live band and the master of ceremonies is Sydney based television presenter Renata Marie.

We discussed her love of musicals, how she kept the role of Glinda fresh through 1600 performances and much more. You can hear our chat by clicking the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

Reducing Breast Cancer Risk

There’s been a lot said about high and low GI foods in recent years. GI stands for Glycemic Index and many experts say that choosing foods based on their GI values can have significant health benefits.

A recently published review of scientific evidence reports that consuming a high GI diet for five years or more may increase the risk of breast cancer by 8%.

It’s a major cause for concern that the average Australian diet contains far too many high GI foods.

1 in 9 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 85, with the disease accounting for around 1 in 4 cases of all cancers in women.

While there are a large number of uncontrollable risk factors for breast cancer such as genetics, menopause and family history, there are also a number of lifestyle-related risk factors that you can change. Factors which increase the risk of developing breast cancer include:
· Excessive alcohol consumption
· High-fat diets
· High processed meat consumption
· Being overweight or obese.

Australia’s leading GI researcher, Professor Jennie Brand-Miller, from the University of Sydney, joined me on my radio program this morning to talk about the research findings and what we can do to reduce the risk of breast cancer and other diseases. You can hear our discussion by clicking the play button on the audio player at the bottom of this post.

You can get more details about the Glycemic Index at the Glycemic Index website.

David Campbell talks about Let’s Go

There are four CDs that have taken an absolute hammering in our home over recent years. The Swings Sessions, The Swing Sessions 2, Good Lovin’, and On Broadway.

All these albums come from one artist – David Campbell.

Now there’s a new album to add to the list. David has gone back to the eighties to bring us a dozen stunning songs under the banner of Let’s Go.

Personally for David, LET’S GO represents the missing link in the songs that helped shape him into the singer he is today.

“I was schooled in this music,” says David. “This was the time where I was hitting puberty, taping songs off Countdown onto my VHS tape and watching them over and over. For me, it’s primal party music, but with style.”

The Style Council’s “Shout To The Top”, John Waites’ “Missing You”, Yazoo’s “Only You”, Spandau Ballet’s “True” – these are the songs that struck an emotional chord with the artist as a young man and provided a counter-balance to the old school swing and Broadway influences David was soaking up from his grandmother’s record collection. As Gran taught David the classics, his mum and aunt fed him a healthy dose of Style Council and Dexy’s Midnight Runners [“Come On Eileen”].

These are the songs that make up the soundtrack to David’s adolescence. “‘A lot of these songs have different memories for me,” he says. “‘Shout To The Top’ I went to my aunty’s engagement party, they put it on the stereo and I was like, ‘Wow, what the hell is that?’ I did my first school dance to ‘True’, for goodness sake,” he laughs.

He joined me on the line during today’s Morning Cafe on 98.5 Sonshine FM. Just click the play button on the audio player below to hear today’s interview.

Remembering Radiothon

I’ve already posted a few photos from the first day of the 98.5 Sonshine FM Radiothon last week. I thought I’d show you a few more of my guests throughout the week.

We finished the Radiothon on Friday evening with a total of just over $175 000. Even though Radiothon is officially over for 2011, we believe the total will rise a little in the coming days.

While we didn’t reach our target of $215 000, our supporters gave everything they could to achieve over 80% of our goal. We were humbled by the continued generosity of our supporters towards securing our financial future.

If you’d still like to give you can give online, or call the 98.5 Sonshine FM office during the week on 9313 0800.

In the mean time, check out a selection of photos and click on any photos you’d like to see a little bigger.
