Only a Few Days Left

I’ve only got a few days left of filling in on-air at Sonshine Fm. I’m looking forward to having next week off before I return to the Bible Society and my work with Bike for Bibles but I’m really going to miss the radio work.

I’ve been having a great time, especially doing the talkback segments of the programme.

If you haven’t had a chance to listen in you can listen on line by clicking on the link on the Sonshine Fm website. I’m on from 9 until midday Perth time until Friday.

Interview Time

In my job filling in as an announcer at Sonshine Fm for 3 weeks, I had opportunity to interview Australian actor and performer Amanda Muggleton today.

She is in town for performances of Darling it’s Noel, which is based around Noel Coward’s 1940 visit to Australia.

She was delightful and a joy to interview.

From left to right in the photo is me, Amanda, fellow announcer and good friend John Donoghue, and Programme Manager and Breakfast Announcer extrordinaire, Arthur Muhl.

I'm Lovin' it!!

I’ve been ‘on-air’ at Sonshine Fm for a couple of mornings so far and it’s great. In my 16 years of radio experience it’s been my first time doing talkback so it adds significant interest to the shift.

It was a busy shift this morning as we discussed the impact of sexual abuse with a clinical psychologist. We had a number of talkback callers wishing to discuss their own struggles and point towards a way forwards.

Thanks to those who have left comments about listening in over the last 2 days. It’s good to know I have some friends in the audience. It’s amazing to think that people like Clint and Joshua, who are on the other side of the world, are listening online. Thanks for your support.

Making Mistakes at Work

Do you ever make mistakes at work? Just little mistakes? I guess we all do from time to time.

Tomorrow I’m heading back into the land of letting everyone know when you blow it. I’m back on-air at Sonshine Fm for three weeks. I’m filling in on the morning show from 9am to midday while the regular presenter takes a well earned holiday.

Why have I focussed on mistakes? It’s not that I expect to make lots, it’s just that it has always amused me that most of the time we make small mistakes and then fix them and move on. Make a couple of small mistakes on-air and you’re sure to hear about it when you next see a friend.

I’ve had people tell me that I gave the wrong time or that I mispronounced a word. So? It’s not that I’m not open to correction, I just find it curious that friends feel the need to point such things out rather than say, “I really enjoyed what you said about …..”

Oh well, I guess it’s not as bad as making a few mistakes on the job when you’re a doctor.

The Thought Factory

A friend of mine, Sheridan Voysey, has a great website that’s worth checking out.

It’s called The Thought Factory and it contains some excellent original content as well as some links to some great articles on other sites.

Here’s what the short bio on his site says:

Sheridan Voysey is a writer, speaker and broadcaster based in Perth, Western Australia.

As a writer Sheridan writes a monthly column for Australia’s national Christian publication ALIVE Magazine, contributes regularly to the devotional Soul Journey, has been published in the US based Discipleship Journal as well as other publications and on numerous websites. Sheridan hopes to have his first book published within the next 78 years.

As a speaker Sheridan is passionate about exploring ideas, employing creativity and engaging the imagination while addressing themes like Christian living, spiritual growth and discipleship. In a training setting Sheridan enjoys developing others in leadership, media and communication skills. He can facilitate small groups and address large crowds … and occasionally people actually understand what he’s talking about.

As a broadcaster Sheridan is the morning announcer on Perth’s 98.5 Sonshine FM. His interviews and forums are often heard on Christian radio stations throughout Australia, New Zealand and beyond. His willingness to tackle issues is well known; his on-air blunders are legendary.

Sheridan is on the leadership team at Mount Hawthorn Baptist Church, is married to Merryn, loves Thai food, is somewhat partial to dark chocolate, devours books, values solitude, hopes to one day own a puppy and is constantly working on his sense of humour.

Check out his site and perhaps sign up for his monthly Thought Starter emails. Say G’day from me and tell him I sent you.
