Crikey – Steve Irwin is dead

Australia’s so called ‘Crocodile Hunter’ has died. 44 year old Steve Irwin, the owner and manager of the Australia Zoo in Queensland, was killed by a stingray barb while recording a documentary. Apparently the barb went through his heart.

This report from NEWS.com.au has some of the early details. Part of the report says, “He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the tragedy occured.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

Irwin’s body is being flown to Cairns.”

Apparently his wife is in Tasmania and does not yet know of his death.

While I wasn’t a fan of the Crocodile Hunter or the image of Australians that he portrayed, it must be acknowledged that he did a huge amount towards promoting Australia. He will be sadly missed by people all around the world.

  • Crikey! (am I allowed to say that??) I can’t imagine that he would have liked to die anywhere else, besides on a nature doco… However…I don’t suppose he would have wanted to die by pushing the limit with an animal and losing. Bizarre way to die. Sorry to hear it.

  • My husband and I were fans of Steve… I have been sad all day long about this news and feel so badly for his wife and children. Somehow we feel as though we knew him personally…. His humor, his love of animals and his joy will be greatly missed by our family and many, many other people…. Debra

  • Terribly sad news. I guess he died doing something he loved. But, goodness … he was so young, and he has such young children. What a loss. I thought he was fabulous, and loved what he did. The world has lost a true-blue Aussie bloke.
    Take care, Meow
