Shopping centre announcements

Do you ever listen to the shop announcements when you’re at a shopping centre? You know, the announcements that call for someone from the electrical department to head towards the customer service desk or the calls for a price check for checkout 7?

I was shopping yesterday and heard a couple of announcements. While I was in Target there was a call for an assistant from Christmas to go to the front desk for a customer service enquiry. I was rather intrigued in that concept. An assistant from Christmas? Were we about to see a little elf scurrying towards the front of the store?

Then I was in the supermarket and heard another announcement. They were paging someone for a phone call. The name was somewhat familiar. Mr Steve Waugh, telephone call please, Mr Waugh. I’d been wondering what he’s been doing since he stepped down from the captaincy of the Australian Cricket Team. Apparently he’s working at the local Coles now.

  • hi there – it occurs to me that only in Oz would the name of a former captain of the nation’s cricket team come to mind when hearing a name paged in a supermarket.
Well… except maybe England. Or India, Fiji, New Zealand, South Africa….
