Ever having an early start that ends up being a late start? I got up bright and early today and was getting ready to get to work early to get a few things organised. I decided to put a little extra air in my tyres before heading off but when I got to my bike I found a big thorn in my back tyre. No air … just a big thorn.
I set about fixing the tube, seeing as I hadn’t patched my spare last time I had a flat. I decided to patch the spare while I was at it too. I put everything back together and started pumping.
As I was getting close to the 110 pounds per square inch that I run in my tyres, there was a mighty rush of air. The tube had given way at the base of the valve. Out came my freshly patched spare. I grabbed another spare tube, which also needed patching, to put in my kit.
So after an early start I’ve patched three tubes, changed tubes twice, thrown one tube away and got to work later than normal. I can’t really complain. I cycle thousands of kilometres each year and get very few punctures. It’s just that it could have happened at a more convenient time.
In the end I suppose it’s just as well that I did get an early start.
