A super birthday

James really did have a super birthday yesterday. He was very impressed with turning 7.

One of the gifts we gave him was a DVD of some very early Superman cartoons. They were first released back in the 40s.

Of all the shiny new stuff he was given, his first priority was to put on this budget priced DVD. I guess that we shouldn’t have been surprised. He is after all ‘Jimmy’ Olsen; Superman’s best friend.

Superman looked a lot different back then and it was interesting to hear the opening of the episodes. Even back then he was faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive and able to leap tall buildings at a single bound. But in those early cartoons he was fighting for truth and justice, not truth, justice and the American way. I guess he still had a Krypton passport. He must have taken up US citizenship some time later.

With everything we had to do yesterday we were hardly at home but he still managed to see a fair bit of the DVD. He got up very early this morning and watched the last of the episodes.

I wonder if he’ll be flying around the house with a superman cape anytime soon ….. just like I did at his age.

  • I can still remember the time my Mum made me a Superman outfit to wear to a fancy dress ball/dance. It would’ve been around 1950 – I was the same age as James then. Yeah, I can still remember it. Home made outfit in those days.
