Cyberhugs

One of the fun things I get to do as a parent is to teach Emily and James about safe use of computers and the internet. There are a lot of dangers on-line but there’s also a lot of good stuff.

In the past few days both of them have wanted to chat to their friends via internet messaging. I’ve set them both up with profiles and all the rest. I’ve warned them of the dangers, like never chatting to anyone they don’t know.

We have two computers at home. One of them is very old but it still cranks along … slowly. I was on one this morning and James was on the other. You can probably guess that I got the old one.

Even though we were only a metre away from each other we were sending messages across cyberspace. I was tempted to think that it was all a bit strange, typing messages to each other when we were in the same room, until he typed, “I want to give you a hug”. Then he got off his chair, walked two steps and gave me a huge squeeze.

I love the internet but there are some things it just can’t replace.
